There may be some hope.. Fortunoff gift card related.
I found this article on Newsday.com today.
Sadly, it looks like Fortunoff may be going under, for real. But, the supposed highest bidder is planning on honoring gift cards and having a going out of bussiness sale.
Newsday article

I hope people with gift cards see this article.
I understand in the article they say there was no notice, but there were plenty of articles in newsday about fortunoff over the past few months. Especially when the nyc location closed its door, that should of been a red flag for many people.
The only other notice they could have is if they sent every person a letter in the mail, but i highly doubt they would waste their time or money sending something like that out.

And there is no way on earth they could track down the recipients of all the gift cards. I had some that were given to me at my bridal shower in 2002 - how could they find me? Like you said, the signs were there - the Manhattan store closing, declaring bankruptcy, they stopped taking their own credit card, etc.
I do hope it works out for people that still have gift cards.

Thankfully I used all of my gift cards last year completing my stemware... but I am so sad I loved shopping in Fortunoffs and that store will forever remind me of my wedding and the hours I spent picking out the "perfect" china, stemware, bedding, etc.
I also loved their jewelry department and received and purchased a few special gifts from there over the years.
Bed Bath and Beyond just doesn't do it for me.

I heard this on the news this morning as well. Supposedly they will honor gift cards for a LIMITED time. I know quite a few people posted about not being able to use their gift cards. My advice to you: Keep checking with the store and use those cards ASAP!

If this takeover goes through there will be a small window of time that you can use them before the store closes.

Yeah but, in all fairness there could have been an article in newsday stating that you had 1 week to use them. People were in the store one night, went back the next day to use the cards and the policy had changed.
We all knew circut city was closing but, you could still use gift cards there.
I didn't have any gift cards left but, I feel for those who did.

I dont think newsday would have that info, and like other companies that file for bankruptcy they are protected and do not have to accept gift cards
In this uncertain economy its best to spend gift cards asap, because you never know who is going to go out of business, gift cards are not CD's they do not appreciate in value, i know alot of people who hoard gift cards and then when the store goes out, they are stuck

So can anyone clarify....are they accepting them right now? or do we have to wait for some sort of a take-over?

No. I would keep checking with the store or the news for additional information.
