Been in our home for one month today. The previous homeowners left the place absolutely disgusting. We are still finding debri throughout the property. That we had to spend the last month doing all the things the previous owner decided to neglect once we had our bid in. And the last is that it is impossible to go to Home Depot and not spend less than $500.

My neighbors!!!!

They have a t-shaped backyard that goes into our front yard.
2 months after moving in they put up one of those huge play gym things in front of my kitchen window so when I sit at my table i am at eye level with the kids on the top level of the play thing. Uggggggg. Our 6 foot fence does no good as this thing towers over it. @#$@#$
The like to sit up there and throw things into my yard too. If that thing was there when we were looking at the house I never would have bought it.

Oh and LIPA! Our power was out for a total of 11 hours yesterday! W T F am I paying them for?

OMG! When we moved in everyone was like, "oh, this is such a quiet neighborhood." Yeah, it's quiet. It's quiet on weekdays and most weeknights, but once Friday evening hits it becomes party central. The corner house throws parties into the late night and the house across the street must have college aged tenants. I'll be sleeping and awoken to the sound of screaming drunk people just hanging out in front of our house. Of course, I can't complain. It could be much...much worse.

For us, we bought a fixer upper that needed some major TLC...however every time we start/started a porject it always turned into something more becuase of issues with the walls, ceilings, etc. etc. etc.

Oh, yea the seller also left us with a ton of garbage in the home and in the yard (after the contract was idicated to get rid of all) and the home was infested with fleas!!!! As soon as we tore up the carpets to redo the wood floor we were attacked by them. Bombed 3 times and then had to hire professionals

I think the worst part was dealing with the RE agents. They did not listen to us and only showed us houses above our price range. And when we went elsewhere we got call after call from them with new listings. Thanks, but we found our house.

That, and the comments my IL's make about how are house is "getting there." I don't know of anyone who moved into a house and re-did the whole thing in less then a week. But I guess that's what they expected.

I hate to say this but welcome to the joys of owning a home. The work is never done and there is always something to fix or improve. Good luck!

ugggh I hear ya on the leaky roof!! problem is, we've been here almost 3 years and haven't replaced it yet!! its actually not too bad, but even being minor it bothers me that it leaks......we're hopefully doing the roof this fall- after we renovate upstairs.

what annoys me most about owning a home is that the "to do" list just NEVER ends!!!!!

Blowing a breaker and they are all mis-labeled by the previous owner so I have to reset my clocks after trying to find the right one.

the day after we closed the CAC broke, only cost $100 b/c of the homewarranty. Then we found out that half of the house was wired to one cuircut,(I kept blowing the fuse when blowdrying my hair) Had to re-wire (add cuircuts) $1600, then this summer or dryer and garbabge disposal broke $200, still under homewarranty. And last but not least, our CAC DIED and we had to replace the whole thing, $6000 Let's hope we won't be needing to do anything for a LONG time!!! We have only been living here 11 months.

Oh...and the cost of buying all of the landscaping supplies, trimmer, lawn mower, etc

btw - our hot water heater was finally fixed last night! crossing my fingers to remain problem free for a while!!

I can take the issues that go on in the house, but when your property taxes go up $500 a year (if you are lucky) and you see nothing out of it, its something you cant control

this is my BIGGEST & ONLY gripe with living on LI. DH & I were just discussing it last night. We are in our house 3 years next week & our taxes went up $1200 last year (no reason why).

We've lived here 6 weeks. So far we have had to replace the dishwasher and clothes dryer. We discovered that all of their phone jacks are dead and they still can't find the keys to the deadbolts .

the $2000 central air that broke on fathers day

the broke garage door that cost $300 and counting to fix, and will need to be replaced for $1,000 in the fall

the landsaping monthly bill of $200

the 30k in renovations and the house still needs ton more

the crappy lawn that looks like sh*t after 3 landscapers charged over $800 a pop to fix..

the 3 floods in my basement that ruined my carpet, and cost $2000 for new tile


it just goes on and on

i miss renting sometimes

WALLPAPER & rushed paint jobs that we have to prep and fix before painting ourselves! The previous owners had some serious drip issues...and refused to sand after spakeling! I have no patience for prep work...good thing my husband does!

DH is constantly saying "it's always something" whenever you even mention something about the house

Right now I have a front yard with dirt because we don't have a clue on what to do with landscaping...and no one to make the decision for us.

The previous owners painted the brick facade and now it's peeling..bothers me to no end. I want to put the shingle siding up but the lotto won't call my numbers.

and it goes on and on....

I can add to this again!

Hail that comes through and makes holes in my deck roofing. Oh and our electric stopped working to our pool pump! What else are we going to have to fix on this house??? Wait don't answer that.

Our Taxes #1 - We're in our house exactly 3 years and our taxes have gone up close to $3k and will go up again due a reassessement in our town.

MAJOR unexpected expenses.

First year in the house:

New Roof and other related issues with rot - $20k to repair

Constant water issues in the brand new finished basement (sellers finished the basement), which resulted in us having to basically unfinish then refinish the basement to put in a sump pump and french drain - $10k to repair

All after we spent $$$ to gut and redo two of the bathrooms in the house.

Now, finally we are actually starting to do the projects we originally planned on doing the first 2 years - Siding and having the inside painted.
