Things to do in NYC on a Saturday in the winter
ILs are coming the weekend after New Years. We are taking them to see the tree at Rockefeller Center and want to do a few other things with them.
I was thinking ice skating in Bryant Park for my little nephew...
Any suggestions for indoor things to do / see? I think they've done Madame Tussauds. Maybe a museum? I'm not sure how big on museums they are...

are they the type to enjoy playing with the toys at F.A.O Schwartz, or is that just me? I LOVE that store during the holidays

How about a broadway play or off broadway play? A nice dinner?

Oh great idea! My SIL has always wanted to go there with her son. Even Toys R Us in Times Square might do (but I'm an FAO Schwartz fan myself!) We could also show my MIL Tiffany's while we're down there...

We do that with them every time they come. This time it's not possible b/c one of my SILs has to leave around dinnertime to catch a flight while the rest of us stay back. We'll definitely do a late lunch or early dinner, though. Good idea.

I think I heard on the news that there is a light show in Grand Central every hour (I don't pass through there so I'm not 100% sure). You could get something at the starbucks and hang out to watch.
Check out the windows at Macy's, Saks, Lord & Taylor.
Macy's Holiday Lane floor - all the trees are set up.

All great ideas, thanks!
I didn't know about Grand Central. That would be perfect, as we wouldn't have to walk too far. (MIL can't walk too, too long b/c she has a bad knee)

If you're going to Rockefeller Center, go to the "Top of the Rock". It's the Rockefeller building that stands behind the tree, and up on top you get to see a beautiful view of the NYC and surrounding areas.
I went in March and although windy and cold, the views were absolutely stunning! Much better than the Empire State Building.

The plus is it's indoors, so it will help keep you warm until you decide to walk outside at the top to see the view.

the view comes at a price though...I think it's $20 per person.
what about the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island?
walking over the Brooklyn Bridge. Dinner at the South Street Seaport?
there are TONS of museums.
there is the Lower East Side Tenement Museum if you want something a lil bit different than MOMA or the Met.
there is the Hayden Planetarium and the Natural History Musuem.
there's the NYC Transit Museum.
the list could go on forever.

From NY Magazine:
Also the Museum of Natural History has a display on mythical creatures that looks cool.

You should go to Madame Tussauds A while ago I went on the behind the scenes tour at NBC I didn't pay so I'm not sure if it was expensive but that was interesting. I was trying to stalk Conan.
My cousins loved the ferris wheel in Toys R Us but they are 10 so your mil may not enjoy it as much as them.

The behind the scenes tour at MSG is pretty interesting. They take you in the locker rooms, onto the floor, into the sky boxes.

I was actually going to suggest this, I'm glad someone did! It was great experience!

museum of natural history is great for kids and people not into museums... it's very visual and has some amazing stuff. It's also right off of central park.....
