Think my son is reading too many comics? (long)

Last year there was a kid that Joseph did not get along with. Well call him “D” or the Gargantuan. At first I told him to try to make friends with him. We would have mock conversations in the car about asking D. about his weekend, what tv shows he likes, etc.

Didn't work.

Like a good parent, I kept up the “make friends” slogan until we were at a birthday party. I saw this gargantuan kid corner my son at the party & put his fist up at him. I did the yell at both of them so I didn't "yell" at another person's kid. I said "Both of you cut it out right now & separate." The kid said that Joseph pulled his straw away. I said "Go get another straw. Joseph - don't do it again." Joseph pulled me aside & said "You said make friends with him. THAT is D."

I said "Stay away from him."

He said "So I DON'T have to be friends with him."

I said "No. Not anymore - just stay away from him."

Later on, the kid cornered Joseph again & I said "What is going on here?" The kid walks away from him immediately. I feel a huge ginormous presence behind me & I realize it's the kid's father. I don't acknowledge him at all but am fully confident that, if necessary, I could take down that father too if the kid goes near my son again. (mother bear instinct can trump any huge burly lumberjack).

Throughout the year, we get phone calls about this kid & Joseph fighting. Joseph, for some reason, isn't afraid of the Gargantuan. He should be. In the end, the teacher told me that she thinks it's best that they are separated next year. I also heard from another parent in the class through the gossiping 1st grader grapevine that they are “two alpha males that fight all of the time.”

This morning, Joseph was griping about going to school. I told him that I was pretty sure that the Gargantuan was not going to be in his class. He was happy. He goes to school. No Gargantuan in his class. Life in 2nd grade is looking up.

So while Joseph was at school, I go over his soccer schedule. Guess who the new kid on Joseph’s team is? (gasp)

I broke the news to him driving home after karate. I hear this dramatic “Nooooooooooooo!” from the backseat. I said “It may not be so bad. You’ll be teammates & you’ll be playing with each other to beat the other guys.”

He huffs & says “Mom! He is my MORTAL ENEMY.”

I burst out laughing & say “Mortal enemy? You’re six. You’re too young for mortal enemies.”

He said “Well, when can I get one?”

I randomly pick “When you’re 21.”

He said “Fine. I’ll wait. But when I’m 21, that guy is my MORTAL ENEMY!”

Let’s hope the Gargantuan stops growing or my son gains some superhero powers.
