Thinking about getting another dog
There is a black lab that needs to be rescued in my area and some one reached out to me and asked if I would be interested. I would really love to take her, but I don't know if my heart is ready. I am having such a hard time grieving Kasey's loss, that I don't want to constantly compare another dog to her. But at the same time the few times I have played with dogs since her passing I have felt so happy.
How long did it take you to be ready to adopt another fur baby?
I really want to help this dog, but I also want to make the right decision.

I'm sorry for your loss. Only you will know if its the right time or not. Have you met the dog? It maybe just what you need.

Re: Thinking about getting another dog
I agree, only you can decide if it will be helpful in the healing process to you, or harmful. But I think helping another animal may help mend your aching heart just a bit.

Re: Thinking about getting another dog
It took me three years to get a puppy after my dog passed but I think if I would have gotten another one sooner it would have helped me sooner. (But I still compare a lot anyway...)

Re: Thinking about getting another dog
I've never lost a dog but I know many who have. Some waited, some didn't, but no one regretted the decision they made. I think it would be natural to compare dogs, but in the end they're all so different so it's futile anyway.
I too think you should meet the dog first and not make a decision on the spot. Just like with any adoption, I would make sure you know why the dog needs a new home, what it's exercise and training needs are, and that you can guarantee the time and dedication it needs before you decide. Remember, it's better that needy dogs find their forever homes rather than another home that can't handle them and give them up again.

Thanks for the replies. I am not in town, so my husband is going to meet with her this week. I will keep everyone updated.
