Thinking of getting a puppy! Question!
My DH may be buying me a puppy for my bday in about a month. I am so excited! I want to get a small dog. I am not too sure of the type of dog I would like yet. I'm wondering what type of dogs some of you have. I'm looking for suggestions. Thanks so much!!

Re: Thinking of getting a puppy! Question!
Please do not buy from a pet store (puppy mill dogs), see above pinned thread for starters.Reasons not to buy from pet stores
Also, if your bday is in a month, it might take longer than that to do some research as to what breed is best for you. Puppies are a lot of work, a lifetime commitment and each breed is very different in what they need. We researched breeds for over 2 years before we decided what kind of dog was right for us (a non shedding, small terrier that was very high energy but that we were sure we could give the exercise and attention he needed).
I will post some links to help you pick the right breed for you so you can find a breeder to purchase from, or go to shelter/rescue, there are plenty of pure breds to be had. Yahoo pets - Choosing the right dog for you

Re: Thinking of getting a puppy! Question!
The above poster is correct. Also, some places call themselves "kennels" and they are just glorified petstores as well. Be weary of backyard breeders as well.
I have a Jack Russell Terrier. She is 17lbs (a little chubby) and she has some typical terrier qualities. She loves to play, dig and hunt and is active. She also sheds a lot. She is loyal and intelligent but Jack Russells are not usually lapdogs- they do need a good amount of exercise.
This site gives you a good overview of breeds

Re: Thinking of getting a puppy! Question!
The above posters are absolutely correct. Do not buy from a puppy store! We can help you find reputable breeders so please feel free to post questions.
We have 3 Havanese, who are the light in our lives. Havanese are small - up to 15 pounds - hypoallergenic, sweet, funny, loving dogs. I highly recommend them! Some more info:

Re: Thinking of getting a puppy! Question!
Well, I have a 4 month old Cavalier King CHarles Spaniel, and she is such a good dog. She doesn't bark a lot and she is very smart. She loves to play and is a total lap dog. She will sleep on the sofa with you for hours. I just love her!!!
My friend has a Havanese and that is also a great dog!!
Yes, please don't buy from a pet store!!

Why buy when others die. Please adopt or rescue a puppy. You can start by looking on Petfinders.com. Please don't buy from a pet store.

Re: Thinking of getting a puppy! Question!
It is a personal choice as to what route you take to get the dog - whether you go to a reputable breeder or you adopt... but, if it were me, i would avoid the puppy stores. There are plenty of great breeders you can look up on the AKC website so you shouldn't have to go to a store like that to get the type of pup you want -- or, there are plenty of shelters to check out. But, the choice is totally yours. Good luck!
For TYPE of dog - we adore our dog - she is a miniature schnauzer and her name is Charlotte. She does not shed, she is extremely obedient and a wonderful dog to have around children. All around, she is one of the best breeds out there to have - not too big, not too tiny, so sweet - we love her! There are pics in my album.
This is a great site to help you determine, based on your lifestyle and choices, what kind of dog is best for you - check it out: CLICK HERE
Info on miniature schnauzers: CLICK HERE
Hope that helps - best of luck!!!!!

Laura is my sister and she mis-typed...she is going to be looking to adopt a puppy or young dog, NOT BUY ONE. She's been looking on petfinder since that is where I found my Lexie.
I wouldn't let her BUY a dog. I promise.

Thanks Melissa!! I apologize for the mis-understanding. I didn't word it right. I would not buy a dog from a pet store. I want to adopt or save a puppy.

Re: Thinking of getting a puppy! Question!
Good for you...I think the best thing to do is the test that AP put up on here...try to find the pup that matches your lifestyle best. Or if there is a type of dog you really like, read about it and see if it would match your lifestyle.
The key things are: How the dog will do when you are not home-some dogs have terrible seperation anxiety, other's have none How much exercise does the dog need - if you are a couch potato, you want a dog that is a couch potato. How agressive/passive is the dog - if you are planning a family in the next five-ten years, you need to know that the dog will accept that.
Good luck!!

Re: Thinking of getting a puppy! Question!
I have a Shorkie which is a Shitzu and Yorkie Mix. She is an amazing breed, small, does not shed, amazing personality, tons of energy but such a lap dog all at the same time.
Best of luck to you, but I would def read up on some breeds that best suits your lifestyle.

I also recommend a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I have 8 month old tri-color male named Murphy. He has a great personality. Very playful, but will also curl up on the couch with you. Good luck!
