This infertility thing just hit me like a ton of bricks- updated to be a little more positive

Ok, I just got back from my RE appointment. I posted earlier that I was waiting for my Lh surge and it didn't come. So I had another sono today and my follie is 21 1/2mm which is great and I should be O'ing any moment. Great, right?

However, she also gave me the results of DH SA. While his count is good it seems that his motility and shape SSUCKS!! Basically she said that our chances are very low iwth IUI and if we are to do more IUI's she would defintaley ADD drugs to improve their chance of hitting a target. So this will be my last natural IUI. She suggested that we move to IVF.

I have always had what they called unexplained inferitlity - and got PG on my own the first time- so I just figured it would take a while and I NEVER imagined I would need IVF. So this hit me like a TON of Bricks.

Then I went to the billing office to see how much money I was wasting on IUI's that now seem to be pointless. I thought my insurance covered eveyrthing with a 10K cap. But no, more bad news!!!! They cover the IUI's and the IVF monitoring but not the IVF or the drugs. Now, more bad news, AND in addition to the regular IVF cost if it is a male factor infertility problem it costs about $2500 more. So now we are talking about 8-10K out of pocket for just one IVF.

I know you ladies have been talking about expense and all, and I know that I am not the only one that has had to deal with this, but I guess I have been a little naive and it all really HIT me today. I feel like I have been run over by a truck and just wnat to climb back in bed.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Sorry for the long rant but this was not what I was expecting to hear.

Well, I guess I will still try and hold out for a successful IUI this month. I am going to do 2 in a row and keep my fingers crossed for the next 2WW.

Re: This infertility thing just hit me like a ton of bricks

thanks everyone. I am really glad that I found this site a month ago and that I have gotten to "know" you all a little since then. It's funny but I think that makes this a little easier. Besides telling DH, I couldnt wait to post here. I KNOW that you all can relate and I dont have to explian details like I would have to with most of my friends.

Venting is soo therapeutic for me. Thanks for letting me.Chat Icon

ETA- The out of pocket costs for these things are getting out of hand.
I can't believe how much we are already paying.
What people fail to factor in is that you have to go to the dr about ten times...with our 40 co-pay thats $400 additional. Plus, if there are any blood tests that must be done that day I have to pay another $35 out of pocket which usually happens 3 times per month! so there's another $105!

Re: This infertility thing just hit me like a ton of bricks

Ok, I just got a little good news. I hope it is true. My primary insurance covers nothing, nada, zilch, zero. Like I said earlier I thought my secondary covered everything up to 10K, but the billing lady at RSoNY said it did not cover IVF. The lady from RSoNY was not the one who "specialized" in IVF since she was out today- so I am hoping she was wrong. Well I just called Oxford and they said I have comprehensive and advanced infertility coverage so IVF Is covered. She also said they will cover all the bloodwork and drugs that my primary denies. AND..... (this is my fave part and I hope it is true). My coverage covers 10K per member per lifetime and since the reason for tx is male factor infertility, when my benefit amount is exhausted, I could use his. Has anyone heard of this? Please tell me its true?Chat Icon

I don't know anything about the treatments and costs -- although my D&C wound up costing us BIG $$ that we hadn't expected.

The good thing is that you are getting all the info. together.....But I wish you lots and lots of luck!!!!!!!!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

it wasnt covered? I would think that was something medically necessary.

The anasthesiologist apparently was not covered, and only X amount from the hospital was covered...what a friggin joke.

Certainly NOT elective surgery!!!
