This is a touchy political subject. Save the popcorn for later.
I have a neighbor who served 3 combat tours in Iraq. While shoveling together yesterday, we started talking about politics. He told me he knows, as fact, that the US military has had Osama Bin Laden in sights several times, locked and ready to take him out, but were called off "higher forces." He said it is impossible for the government not to know where he is and how to take him out.
I didn't really know what to make of it and we moved on to other subjects, but it still made me curious. Do you think its possible that they did this? That they know where he is and had the opportunity to take him out, but they didn't? I mean, ANYTHING is possible, but I don't know if I want to believe the government would do that. I guess nothing could surprise me, especially when it comes to the government.
Granted, this could be TOTAL speculation or BS, but it was still food for thougt.
ETA: His "source" is a retired Special Ops vet. Obviously, this could be total BS as I said, but it still made me think.

I don't know how he could "know as a fact" unless he was the one with the gun pointed at him.
That's just my opinion, I'm not one to buy into government conspiracy theories. When the gov't says they want to get em, I believe them.

My thought on this is that they don't want to take him out. There is something to gain by having him go about his business..intelligence wise.
My feeling is we know exactly where he is and what he is doing and we are doing intelligence gathering.
I also think when the time is right we will take him out along with the main operatives who control his world.
It may take a while.

thats exactly what i was thinking too... not to say hes not telling the truth... its just hard to believe he was that guy with the gun, and hes just telling people that we let bin laden go... i just dont see how he would be allowed to just give that info out..

Re: This is a touchy political subject. Save the popcorn for later.
On the one hand, I wouldn't be surprised, on the other hand, I can't imagine why Bush or Obama (assuming they knew) would NOT attempt to catch him. It would be/have been a huge burst in approval points for either one.
Also, was this on WikiLeaks? It seems like EVERYTHING we weren't supposed to know made its way there, and this would have been quite a coup, you know?
So I guess I am leaning slightly in the direction of it being untrue/inaccurate.

I wouldn't take it as FACT, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were true. We only "know" what the government wants us to know.

Well if its true.. I am sure hes not supposed to be speaking about it and would be in big trouble..Let us know if he goes missing in a day or two. Then I would be suspicious!

Honestly I don't buy it. At this point we have been after him for a VERY long time and in my eyes looks bad that we can't catch him.
Yes, it could be good for intelligence gathering but even if we get him the next in line would step up.

I would not be suprised if this is true. In many ways, it may make things even worse for us if US forces killed him, but that's JMO.

Re: This is a touchy political subject. Save the popcorn for later.
if he was "informed" enough to know this for a fact, he'd also be "informed" enough to know why and "intelligent" enough not to tell his neighbor.
not to knock your friend or his service to our country...but my brother did 2 tours, my bff was JAG for a year there, and I know countless others that are either currently serving or have served that are privy to NO INFO whatsoever.
I also know people with Top Secret clearnance who aren't even privy to this info.
I am leaning towards big time talk in the barracks to pass the time type of urban legend.

I doubt it is a 'fact' unless he was the one with Bin Laden in his sight.
However, I'd be surprised if this wasn't true.

ITA and I speak from experience and wont go into it.
The reasoning behind it is human nature-people are not always capable of handling the truth so it is filtered.

Yeah this is how I'm leaning. I don't believe he really KNOWS at all, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was true.

Exactly. And I imagine that, if it did happen, the parties involved would be debriefed and ordered to keep the information classified - something the military takes very seriously. So I won't say I flat out don't believe it, because it is definitely within the realm of possiblity, but I'd be suspicious of his source. Some people just like to talk to make themselves feel important.

That's what I was thinking too...The sheer advances in technology alone make it so hard to believe we can't or haven't found him.

I agree. I also think that you need to account for the idea of making this guy a martyr if you were to "take him out", which would spur Muslim extremists to worldwide violence.
I highly doubt your neighbor is "in the know" too. He's speculating based on something he heard - just as we are.
Also - I can't imagine it's too hard to find a 6'4+ guy that walks with a cane & needs medical attention for his kidney disease.
