THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL POST! But....
I work at a special education school as a social worker. Our students are middle and high school students with high functioning learning disabilities (dyslexia, ADD, some Asperger's, that type of thing). Listening to these kids talk about the election and the candidates and the issues is, in a word, FASCINATING! It's so interesting how some of them are very well-informed, how some really just parrot what they have heard elsewhere, and how they all manage to just make it all sound so SIMPLE . Honestly, sometimes I think to myself: if only these kids made our political decisions for us - shit would actually get DONE!

It is pretty funny sometimes how kids seem to be able to simplify things so well. If only it was that easy all the time!

THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL POST! But....
My co-worker was just telling me that her kids have been learning about the election and it's funny (or scary) how you can kind of tell what the teacher's beliefs are by the information that the kids bring home. She asked both of her children who they'd vote for if they were old enough. Her DD replied - "Obama. I just don't trust Romney." Her DS on the other hand replied - "Romney because he doesn't think the government should tell us what we can do with our money and Obama does."
I thought it was hilarious!

Wowsers!
I would really hope teachers would remain as unbiased as possible so their students could make as educated a decision as possible.

Exactly. The DD is 9 and the DS is 7!

One of my students is 18 and can vote for the first time. I try very, very hard not to put ANY of my own bias into our discussions. We have done ISideWith quizzes etc. so that she can formulate her OWN opinion. I do my best, but I'll admit it isn't always easy!

I imagine it's terribly difficult to be in your position. I give you a lot of credit, I'm not sure I'd be able to be totally unbiased.
Politics is such a personal decision and it's something that people tend to be passionate about, trying to educate our youngsters on it has got to be a very difficult task.
Dear God, did I really just say "youngsters"? Shit I'm old.

Thanks It's easier because I work one-to-one with the students, so I'm able to let them guide the discussion a bit more. BUT it gets even trickier because they are special ed students, so sometimes their level of understanding is different and I have to try to explain both sides of an issue in a way that makes sense to them - this is where it gets really hard not to let my own bias come through. I'll admit, once or twice I have thought to myself "shit, I hope those kids' parents aren't xxxx supporters, or I may get in trouble!"

I love out of the mouths of babes! It must be interesting to hear the logic because you're right...they boil it down to the basics.
I know my 9 year old is a socialist. She insists that everyone should share.
My 11 year old came home from his grandparents house spouting a political belief completely different than my own. I explained my own view of why I don't agree with grandpa's beliefs. I did bite my tongue when I was thinking "ok, I guess you'll have to move out of the house..."

My 5th grade teacher - we're going back to the Reagan years here - was such a die hard Republican he did NOT hold back. We were a bunch of 9 and 10 year olds who didn't know anything about anything except that Reagan was the best thing since sliced bread.
