This is why I hate going to the dentist!
I went yesterday for a cleaning and a check up and to possibly get an old cavity re-filled. Turns out that it is too deep and I need a root canal. On top of that, they did x-rays and told me that I need braces! Iam 24!!! Where the he!! were these people when I was 16???? I have a baby tooth right in the front (the eye tooth, canine) and the x-ray shows that it is close to coming out (although it isn't loose one bit) and there is a permanent tooth behind it but it may not come down at all or if it does, will not come down properly. I am being referred to an orthodontist for a consultaion for braces!! I just figured that I'd have this baby tooth forever, never thinking that it would fall out and I'd be left with a hole in my mouth. Anyone ever been in a situation like this as far as needing braces because of a baby tooth? What is the process? This is gonna be soo exspensive isn't it?
Sorry so long....I am just not too happy right now.

Re: This is why I hate going to the dentist!
I got braces at 29 because my wisdom teeth crowded the top row so bad that I had one tooth that I swear I could open beer bottles with.
I got them in November & they were taken off in June just before my July wedding. They wanted me to put them back on and remove some teeth (not the wisdom ones) but I decided against that. I just wear my retainer a few nights a week to maintain. I didn't want to remove healthy teeth.

Dh (26) was told he needed braces because of his "bite". I guess those problems can come up at any age.

Re: This is why I hate going to the dentist!
I had the same problem, but I was in the 5th grade (what age is that, anyway?) and had to get my baby tooth pulled and got braces. That's the only reason why I got braces.
Why didn't they pull the tooth years ago and give you braces then? Maybe you can get those braces you don't see -- the ones that go behind the teeth.
...but just last week I got 2 of widsom teeth pulled (I have to go back and get the others done), but in the meantime my teeth are moving and my bite is different.

That is another thing I am worried about! I only have one wisdom tooth barely braking throught the gums, none of the others are even peeking through yet....how can I get braces if somewhere down the road, the wisdom teeth are gonna mess it all up again?
ETA: Not one dentist ever mentioned it when I was a kid. I was just talking to my mom and she said, no. They never discussed it

This happened to me - I got braces on at grade 5 (age 11/12). They came off a year later. Then my wisdom teeth started coming in and had to get braces again Junior Year in HS for a few months, but the orthodontist put the second set on FREE b/c he realized they were put on too early. So, he straightened my teeth back up, and then my wisdom teeth were taken out a year later. I have a slight over bit now, but the teeth have remained pretty straight.

Maybe taking out your wisdom teeth out before you get braces -- wonder if that would do it -- I'm not a dentist or orthodontist

yeah...that sounds like the right thing to do. I'll have to speak to the orthodontist about that.

I don't blame you. I don't mind the needle to numb you up but while they are doing the work and pushing and pulling, I get anxious because I am waiting to feel the pain.

I know! You would think they would mention that and take that into consideration!! It is crazy that I'll have bring this up to them. I think they just might be concerned with waiting too long on that baby tooth but I guess when you think about it....I'd be screwed one way or another!

Re: This is why I hate going to the dentist!
I've heard the same exact story. A good friend of mine recently switched dentists, because her new insurance didnt cover her old dentist. Anyway, she has never had cavity or anything. Then she went to first appointment with the new doctor, who told her she still had a baby tooth and that the adult tooth was come in and that she would need to get the baby tooth removed. He also mentioned braces, and then proceeded to fill in a tooth because she had cavity. Long story short, she went back to her old dentist and he told her that indeed the adult tooth was there, but since it didnt come down there was no need to remove the baby tooth or get braces. He also looked at the filling and told her that wasnt necessary either. I would definitely go for a second opinion.

Re: This is why I hate going to the dentist!
I had braces put on when I was in my late thirties. I had them for four years I had my wisdom teeth removed before they became a problem when I was 18. I would definately take care of the wisdom teeth and baby tooth removal before investing in braces! Good Luck!!

About three years ago, I saw a dentist that was an authorized "Invisalign" doctor and went for a consult strictly for cosmetic purposes and he mentioned to me about removing the baby tooth and getting braces but that was the extent of the conversation b/c he then proceeded to tell me that Invisalign cost $4000....so I left! He didn't take any x-rays so I didn't know the whole story with the permanent tooth and everything.
