This is why Mattel recalled the toys with Magnets
Girl got infection from Mattel magnets The poor little girl.
Between this and the Magnetix issues last year I've just fired off an email to family that we don't want any toys with magnets in them. Just not worth the risk.

What were the Magnetix issues last year? I'm a teacher and have an unopened set in my room that I just bought... was there a problem with them?? TIA! :)

A few kids ingested one or more of the magnets and they either connected together or with another piece of metal the kid ingested in their intestines. That created a blockage. One kid died, several others required big surgeries. Link to wikipedia entry
