Re: Those interested in opening their own business
I'll start
not ready to give my Salary yet
and being that my DH makes commission only- it's nice to know that we have a set amount coming in every month
then if he has an off month- it's not the end of the world

Re: Those interested in opening their own business
Unfortunately i think that i make more now than i would with the business venture I really want to pursue. Also, it would probably take up a lot more of my time. On the plus side i think that I would love the career change. I hate what i do now.
Also, I am afraid of sinking a lot of money into a business that could potentially fail. That about sums it up!
I still think I may do it, i am still in the research phase.

Re: Those interested in opening their own business
What is it? -a restaurant/bar in Huntington Village (I'd love to open something very casual & kid friendly...kind of like an updated Good Steer. Very barnish or rustic...wide plank floors, wood beams, etc.)
What's stopping you? -my DH and dad *DH is well aware of the failure rate for retail shops and restaurants, plus he doesn't like how much time you have to commit to them (being there on weekends and late at night) *my father owned a restaurant-bar in HV and has always told me "stay away from anything that has to do with alcohol" based on his own experiences.

Re: Those interested in opening their own business
I did it!!
It's a resume writing business..
Even if i did it full time, it would not replace my current salary, nor would it be enough to support the lifestyle I am accustomed to-- it's a way to make some extra money-- and really help people who need additional support in this area.

Re: Those interested in opening their own business
I do not have the start-up. We would need about $4 M. I hate to take out those kinds of loans/favors.
We had an interested investor once, but he wanted 30%. too much for our liking.

Re: Those interested in opening their own business
Photography - selling it via my website, at outdoor flea markets/festivals/shows, and online at stock photography sites.
What's stopping me? Having no idea where to start and the possible tax implications. I heard that I have to make a profit in the first year/3 years or the IRS will penalize you. Don't know if it's true or not, it could be totally false.
Also, what's stopping me is my level of committment. It's something I thought about doing for years, but will I really put enough effort into it to make a profit? I don't know. I get these fleeting ideas and then never follow through. But once money is involved, that's much worse.

You do not have to show a profit in the first year. Actually that would be before many businesses get their ROI.

Re: Those interested in opening their own business
I would love to open up a business for writing resumes & job prep.
I actually do this now, but have yet to charge the people I do it for. I think I'm being too nice.

Re: Those interested in opening their own business
Business: Custom stationary
Holding back: Not enough experience. With practice and education, I'm certain I'll get better. Plus its a side business, so I dont expect it to take my current job any time soon.

Custom Made Adult/Children's Clothing.
I already have a website and am waiting to get a new logo. Once I do I will be going to nearby kids boutiques trying to sell my stuff.
Plus it would be a side job so I only really do stuff for it in my spare time.

That's what I was thinking, but the IRS never ceases to amaze me.
With me the fear of the unknown is the hurtle. Once I clear that, it seems silly that I even worried.
I just need more information and a great urge to committ to this.

Re: Those interested in opening their own business
Type of Business: Title Agency
Started: March of 2003. This is the best thing I have ever done. Though you get nervous about the money (taxes, salary, etc.), the liability, the overall success, there is nothing like a sense of accomplishment ever day I am here. Owning your own business is overwhelming and extremely satisfying at the same time.
Try it, there's nothing like it. And so what if it doesn't work out. Then you pick up the pieces and move on. But you don't want to regret something especially when you have a talent at it.
