Re: Those who are in testing grades....have you started
I am building it in- giving my kids ELA-type questions for reading response, and I gave a practice ELA last week. We don't have any test-specific materials yet.

Re: Those who are in testing grades....have you started
not allowed to do test prep in my school. Principal says "we only care about their skills". In the next breath he says "We really gotta bring their scores up this year"
Makes no sense to me but what do i know I'm just the teacher.

I don't entirely disagree- while there is WAY too much testing, I do believe (at least in ELA) that if the kids have basic reading and writing skills, they will do fine.
My suggestion- rely on the NYS standards to inform your planning, and be very, very familiar with whatever exams your kids have to take. I have taught middle school ELA for several years, and there are certain things that come up pretty consistently- like author's purpose and characterization (especially in graphic organizers) and the listening for my grade is almost always an informational piece.
I would also suggest printing out the tests from the NYSED website. For ELA there is a sample test, and the 2006 and 2007 tests are there as well. The kids really DO need to be familiar with the format of the test and should do at least one dry run. You can also see what types of questions are asked and build that into your lessons.

Re: Those who are in testing grades....have you started
yes, for social studies, but that's it. i hate teaching to the test. i go about my normal routine and curriculum.... a few weeks before the test we practice, they get a sense of the layout of the test, etc. but i don't think anyone's teaching should be dictated by a test. if you are doing your job, they will do fine.... the skills you are teaching them by teaching the curriculum will be what they need to pass the test, IMO.

I teach special education. The students in my class are taking 6th 7th and 8th grade tests. They are not functioning on grade level. They are not exempt. I was asked to do test prep. I think it is horrible. Thanks President Bush. No child left behind huh..can I leave YOU behind?

Re: Those who are in testing grades....have you started
I am in CT- so we have the CMTs- Connecticut Mastery Test. We are always teaching to the test to try to bring up scores- but in Language Arts, honestly it is what I would be teaching anyway- just a bit more intensive as it gets closer to testing month
