Those who get private speech lessons...
Can you recommend a therapist or company you go with? DS did not qualify for free services because his comprehension is in the 95th percentile which threw his numbers off. He was in the 5th percentile for speech and they told us that basically he needs the services but he is too advanced in other areas to qualify for them. So after 2 months and little advancement in speech we are considering getting private sessions for him.
So I'm wondering if you could recommend therapists you have used and also any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Where are you located?
My DD received services through a place in Commack..
I think her name was Linda Tupperman. (She had more than one speech therapist though)

My son sees Donna Lederman (she has two other therapists that work in her offices who are great as well). She has two offices....East Williston and Commack. Her website is DonnaLederman.com.

Re: Those who get private speech lessons...
I was going to ask how old your son is but I checked your profile and see he is 2. I would check back and get him reevaluated but through CPSE when he is 2 1/2. My DS is 4 now and they evaluated through CPSE at 2 1/2. His receptive language was very high too but his expressive was very low as was his articulation. He received speech therapy 2x a week at the time and his expressive got much better but his articulation didn't and it even went lower bc of his age. So now he is approved for PROMPT therapy 3x a week. You might want to reconfirm with your SD and consider whether to start him with someone now or wait until Nov. I'm not 100% sure how it works when you pay out of pocket but I think you have to get him evaluated first and then see what your insurance will cover. Or do they take your EI evals into account? Anyway, that can take a few weeks. If he starts with someone and then you get him evaluated through CPSE and he qualifies, he might have to start up with someone new which depending on your child, can be very easy or it can be hard.
I'm NOT recommending that you don't take him now but just giving you more food for thought.

Re: Those who get private speech lessons...
Thank you for the feedback everyone. We are located in Merrick. Right now we are still going back and forth on if we should wait until the 2 1/2 year mark. But I'd like to start gathering some numbers and making some calls to help us make this decision.

Re: Those who get private speech lessons...
I use Karen Blane. She is on Judith Drive in South Bellmore. She has been terrific. I had my son evaluated thru the school district at 3.5. While his verbal was always on the low end before that, I knew he wouldn't qualify because his other parts of speech were very high and he had a huge jump from 2-2.5 and from 2.5-3 and I am one not to rush my kids and let things ride out. At 3.5, I was concerned with articulation issues. He scored over 95% for his verbal language at that time but pretty much the lowest for articulation and qualified for services 2 times a week for 30 minutes each. I found Karen since she is so close to my home and started him around 4yrs. He took services for about a year and a half and he did great and now no longer qualifies just in time for kindergarten. I am paying for her over the summer just to keep up on the sounds he still doesn't have that need extra help. She has been great. FM me and I can send you info if you are interested. I picked her since she is close to home but since choosing I have heard that she is one of the best in the neighborhood and heard nothing but terrific success stories with her.

Since you are right in Merrick, add this name to your list. We use Elizabeth Bowen in Bellmore. She specializes in PROMPT, if he needs it

Re: Those who get private speech lessons...
I am located in Merrick as well. I just had my DS reevaluated through CPSE.
Going out of pocket is expensive but I know our insurance covers so m any sessions, maybe 24/year. I would definetely get him evaluated through CPSE when you can.
Someone on here also recommended going to one of the universities with a speech program (Hofstra and Adelphi) and you can get speech services for very cheap. She used Adelphi for her daughter and had all positive things to say.
