Those who put cereal in babies bottle
Can you tell me why you did it and if it worked for you?
Also what bottles you use and what nipple you used.
TIA!

Re: Those who put cereal in babies bottle
I used playtex ventaire fast nipples and it worked great for 1 tsp of rice ... he normally took med nipples
I started doing it because he had diarrhea for over a week, it helped us go from 6 poops a day to 3.
We also have avent bottles, I hated the variable flow nipple and their "fast nipple" isn't really a fast nipple its just 3 small holes as apposed to 2 small holes in the medium flow.

Re: Those who put cereal in babies bottle
we did it bc dd was a spitter upper. it didn't help at all. we used the playtex vent aire bottles with the fast nipple.
we switched to enfamil AR formula (which just means added rice) and that did the trick. she stopped spitting up
we still use the same bottles wiht the new formula

Re: Those who put cereal in babies bottle
I did it bc of reflux. 1 tsp of oatmeal for every 3 oz worked great. I tried lots of bottles but avent variable nipple worked the best. Dr browns y cut were too slow and born free were too fast.

Re: Those who put cereal in babies bottle
for her reflux, and only in her last bottle of the night. we use 1.5 tsp of rice cereal in 6 oz of formula. We use playtex drop-ins with the medium flow nipple.

Re: Those who put cereal in babies bottle
I did it b/c of reflux. We use A LOT compared to everybody else. We use 2.5 TABLESPOONS per 6oz, so it works out to about 1.25 teaspoons per ounce. It's success is debatable. Prior to doing it, she was spitting up so much that she was not gaining weight. After adding that much cereal she started gaining...I'm still not sure if it is b/c more of the milk was staying down, or if it was just b/c of simply giving her more calories.
In any case, we use Dr. Brown Level 4 nipples.
Oh, and we use barley instead of rice to prevent constipation.

Reflux - it did help some, but ultimately we still needed to move to a proton pump inhibitor type of drug.
Dr. Browns - level 2 was fine for the rice cereal in the bottle, we're now on 3. y-cut was too fast for my DD - she was choking on it. we do 1 tsp for every 4 ounces or so so it does not thicken it very much. also, it's Alimentum so it starts out super thin to begin with.

We did it for reflux (both kids) and used Playtex drop-ins with the cereal or y-cut nipple.

Re: Those who put cereal in babies bottle
Our ped told us too for mild reflux. We used the playtex drop in nipples, med flow and then just stuck the tip of the knife it the hole to make it a tiny tiny slit instead. The Y nipple did not work for us and at the time, fast was too fast. We did one tsp per 3oz also.

Re: Those who put cereal in babies bottle
We did it because DS refused to eat oatmeal otherwise. The ped discouraged it, but told me I needed to get the oatmeal in him.
So, the only way he would 'eat' it was in the bottle. That is what I made an executive decision to do.

Re: Those who put cereal in babies bottle
I just started doing this now... only to help him to get to sleep and STAY asleep since lately he's been waking up at 2am... Tonight is day one..I made his normal 7oz bottle...and put 3 of his spoons (don't know how much that is for a reg spoonful LOL) and he inhaled it! So right after, I gave him 2 more oz with one more small scoop and he was out! We'll see if this does the trick LOL BTW I use the ventair bottles with level 2 nipples..since there only is 2 size that fit that bottle.

no there are 3
some of the moms on here informed me they are the same nipples as the platex drop ins! There is slow, med and fast.

Re: Those who put cereal in babies bottle
we just started last night. first, because he was eating less and our ped thought he could use the calories - wasnt gaining as steadily, also to have more sound sleep at night (recommend by our ped)
3 tsp in his last bottle at night with 6 ounces of formula (single grain rice)
we use tommee tippee with variable flow nipples! he slept his longest stretch ever last night 10pm - 5am. We shall see tonight.

Re: Those who put cereal in babies bottle
We us the Playtex Ventair bottles with the Dr. Brown Y shaped nipple which fit perfectly. The Y shaped nipple opens wider for the cereal.

One more question... Oatmeal or rice?
Our ped reccomended we start him on cereal at 2.5 months and we did. He's been in the 90-95% for his age in weight. leghnth and head size..so only formula bottles weren't cutting it anymore to satisfy him.
She recommended rice at first then to move on to oatmeal. We haven't moved on to oatmeal yet. We do 1 tbsp in 6-7oz's of formula, twice a day ...in the mid-morning and his last bottle at night.
I use the playtex drop-in's fast flow nipple slightly stretched with the tip of a knife. The y-cut nipple didn't really work...he wasn't getting much out and the ventaire fast nipple was too fast...plus he prefers the latex nipple to the silicone nipple.

Re: Those who put cereal in babies bottle
We had to do it because DS had very bad reflux and couldn't keep his bottles down. We used Dr. Brown's widenecks with level 2 nipples.
Now at 5.5 months we just stopped and DS is no longer spitting up.
