My friend's DH is pretty high in their company and his hours vary. In office by 7/730 and gets home between 7:30/8. His office is on the island so at least he doesn't worry about extra time for the train/commuting.

It depends on time of year and workload but it is not a 9-5 job. Expectations are you work as much needed to get job done, always available by cell and checking emails nights / weekends. I have meetings that start at 730/8am some days and I have meetings put on the calendar at 5 or 6pm. Sucks, but it is what it is.

Re: Those who work high level management jobs
My DH is Senior Management VP for a large hospital in the city - he's out the door at 6am and home any time between 6 and 9 - sometimes later depending on what's happening. He has some flexibility, obviously, at that level ......but considerably more responsibility - so while he occasionally sneaks out early to play golf or something, that's NOT the norm. We're stressing b/c he may have to turn around and go home on the 2nd day of our planned (and paid for) Disney vacation over the summer -
Because of his schedule, once we had the kids, I couldn't (or wouldn't I should say) accept a lot of opportunities b/c of the additional hours expected. Im'also in the city, but I work 8:30 - 4:30 - leave the house 6:45 and home at 6:00
If we both worked high level jobs, our kiids would always be with daycare, sitters, etc. We'd never see them (or each other)

Those who work high level management jobs
My father is a director of a major hospital and leaves the house at 5:30 and is home at 5:15. Of course there are days he is there later or has to go in crazy early to meet with the night shift people or go back after dinner for a meeting but otherwise it is fairly regular.

Okay, so it sounds like my Dh's hours as a director are pretty standard then.

DH runs a global department and his morning hours are pretty flexible but he never gets home before 8 or 9 each night. He is also available by phone and email and it is more the norm than not he working on something late at night and on weekends also. It never gets better because he's always striving for the next promotion so he works even harder. The only plus is that I'm able to stay home with my DD. He also travels 3 times a year for almost a month each.

I work 7-3 but have an amazing boss who understands that I want to be home in time to eat w my kids. I check email constantly and occasionally do some stuff of the weekends. I am OCD organized when it comes to work so that helps.

Those who work high level management jobs
working for high up ppl I know the hrs depend on a place of work as well culture. In our office generally its 8/8:30-5:30. But mgt and non mgt like myself can stay some days veryyy late and always available via email/phone. Also everyone works if needed weekends or super early in the morning from home. Our office is a private small finance company, so these type of hrs are part of the benefits.

My hours a little more flexible but I'm generally working from 9am-5pm during the workweek and then again from 8-9pm 2-3 days a week I try not to work weekends but always have my phone with me and check emails. I am lucky enough in that if I need a later start, I can do that but I always end up paying for it. In fact, Ive been hesitant to take vacation b/c it takes forever to catch up. My boss is pretty good about working remotely and my job always requires me to be in another location. She's generally not on my case for "whereabouts". That being said, I'm no slacker which is why I' think I've built that trust.

Dh is a director (global treasury) and he works 9-6 in the office but is expected to be on international calls at 2 or 3am depending on other countries.
I feel like he is always on call even when he isn't in the office.

I think many jobs expect longer hours now-DH works from 715 in the morning to anywhere between 5/530, and he often has to go to dinners/events that last until 9/10

My husband is a SVP, in a corporate global arena and this is pretty much his life. I can go days without really speaking with him.

I am not in a 'high level' management position (yet) but I feel like these hours are pretty standard for any fast paced corporate environment. I am out of my house by 7 in the office by 8 and not home until 7:30-8pm (earliest). It not uncommon for me to answer emails and take a few (usually quick) calls over the weekend.
It's just the nature of the rat race, corporate america, and most types of client service delivery jobs.

Re: Those who work high level management jobs
I can't remember the last time I worked an 8 hour day or 40 hour week. Plus I am on-call 24/7 not to mention the weekend emails...it is just part of the territory in a high level position. Oh and I commute over 90 miles a day.

Re: Those who work high level management jobs
I think it depends on the culture of the organization. I work for a large food CPG company, we start at 8am and most people are out of the office by 5pm. It's not uncommon for me to catch the elevator with the CMO at the end of the day. If there work still to be done, most people will just do it at home in the evenings.
