From what I have heard you might not have a choice right now. I know for sure that LIJ and North Shore are not allowing children to visit (even siblings) b/c of the swine flu. So I guess he is not overreacting since the hospitals themselves have implemented this policy. It is so scary My second is due during flu season so I wonder if the same will be true then.
The policy has been implemented with the patients, not the visitor, as the aim of its protection. Most of the swine flu has been passed child to child in schools, making them the most likely suspects when it invades a hospital ward unrelated to illness (like maternity, psych, etc).
Exactly ... it's that your child will get it by coming to the hospital, they do not want patients to get it *from* children for the reasons stated above.

Of course. I just meant that obviously if this illness is serious enough that a hospital is changing their visitor policy b/c of it (which I don't think they do during normal flu season) than obviously the swine flu is a concern and issue. And, if there are other visitors theoretically a visiting child could catch it from other visitors just by touching things etc. Also, I thought she was implying that she was concerned about her newborn also.
