Those with fireplaces
For all you that have a fireplace in your living room/ great room, do you have your tv mounted above it? Were in the process of redoing our fireplace. My dh wants the tv mounted above, I feel it will take away from the look of it. Please share opinions, pics

Re: Those with fireplaces
I have a fireplace in my den, not my formal living room. But our den is our tv/family room space.
We considered mounting the tv above the fireplace, but ultimately did not, for a few reasons:
1. People advised that it would be a strain (neck strain) to watch the tv up there, because it would be hung higher than eye level, and I realized that would be true in our case;
2. I also heard that the heat from the fireplace could damage the TV/electronic stuff;
3. I liked having the fireplace itself, not the tv, as the focal point of the room; and
4. The way we chose to set up the room to optimize seating, it just made more sense to utilize other wall space for the TV.
That being said, I see a lot of homes where people have the TV mounted on the fireplace, so their TVs obviously don't get destroyed. I think a lot of people like the idea of putting the TV over the fireplace.

Re: Those with fireplaces
We have a fireplace in the living room with a tv mounted over it. Logistically it was the best place to put them both in the room. It is a corner fireplace.

Those with fireplaces
We have a fireplace in our den. We originally had the TV over the fireplace, but it didn't lend itself to optimal furniture placement and seating. We are able to fit a much larger couch and more seating with the tv on another wall, so we moved it. Otherwise, I really liked having it over the fireplace

This. We have a wood stove insert so I think the heat would actually harm the TV.

Re: Those with fireplaces
Mine looks like the pic below and DH and I really like it. Otherwise, the tv would've had to have been in the corner. I like it better on top of the mantle. It is a neater look and the room (albeit large) doesn't feel cluttered. I never feel any neck strain, but we our couch is pretty far back.
ETA: I have a gas fireplace. My sister couldn't mount hers over the fireplace since hers was wood burning. Image Attachment(s):

We had ours over our wood burning fireplace for 3 years without any problems

Re: Those with fireplaces
We have it above the fire place. No neck strain. We barely use the fire place though.

I'm not a fan of it being mounted over the fireplace. honestly, I think it significantly detracts from the look of the fireplace. Additionally, I don't think having a TV that high is comfortable at normal viewing distances/heights.
Plenty of people do it. If I were really stuck from a layout perspective, i would do it, but I wouldn't be thrilled about it.

Re: Those with fireplaces
Had mine mounted for years above my fireplace in my first home, a condo. You'll see pics below.
Never had a single prob with the TV being damaged. No issue with the strain of neck or anything b/c I made sure to mount it and then position the seating areas with more than enough space room so it was actually better "eye-level-wise" --- When the TV was on and we were watching it, it was the focus of our attention. When it was off and the fireplace was on, that was the focus. When it was both - it was both lol. It was just nice either way.
For the specific space I had it in -- it would have been shoving it in a random spot to accommodate the TV elsewhere. It would have been a random after-thought and would have looked and felt odd. But I guess it all depends on the size of the room, furniture, TV, distance, space, etc. For me, it worked great. Miss it!! Miss that whole house, actually!
PICS -

This exactly! If I didn't have another option of course I would utilize the space, but it definitely doesn't "add" anything in my opinion. I prefer the television to be at eye level though have seen endless people mount their tvs in the same spot so I don't think it'd be wacky, just a preference.
