thoughts on "gifted" preschool, and getting your child tested...
what are your thoughts on having a 3 yr old tested, and possibly going to, a gifted preschool? What would make you do this, what would hinder you from doing this?

I wouldn't. I can't explain why, but I just wouldn't. Unless of course my dc had a severe behavior problem that could not be treated any other way.

I think these schools are wonderful and do such great things for children.
That being said, I would only send my child there if I felt he really needed it.

I am having DS tested, but I am always skeptical of schools that claim they cater to "gifted" children. DS is advanced for his age (he is 3) and actually told me that school was boring to him this year. When I asked him why, he told me they had too much play time when he wanted to read a book. Before that statement, I would have kept him in a regular nursery class.
To the OP: can you FM me the school you are looking at if it is on LI? TIA!

It would take a lot for me to get my child gifted and put them in a gifted school, especially for preschool. Maybe if my child was bored I'd look for a more curriculum based school and not so much play based but gifted, no. Not for me.

I wouldnt, but bc I dont think my son is gifted. Now my BFFs child on the other hand is CLEARLY gifted. She had a REALLY rough time with him in preschool last year (behavior wise) bc he was just bored and not being challenged. So in her case, I definitely would look into it.

I would not pay extra money for a gifted preschool. So, if it costs the same as a regular preschool would, then that is fine. But, at that young age, I don't personally believe a gifted preschool curiculum has a bearing of how well a child will excell in school later on, so I think the extra cost would be unnecessary.

Re: thoughts on "gifted" preschool, and getting your child tested...
Yes, I would. My husband was a "gifted" child and struggled in school for teh first few years because he was bored out of his mind and not challenged enough. His parents pulled him from school and put him in a gifted program where he excelled. Sophomore year of high school he was taking college classed at a local SUNY school for math and computers. Even to this day he is easily bored and constantly needs to be challenged.... That's why God gave ME to him
But, YES, if my child were gift I'd make sure they were challenged enough in school where ever that may be!

my dh is very similar but the area he grew up in did not have a gifted school - so he skipped grades- which was only a temporary fix - he was always board and acted out because of it - also never learned any good habits as far as school work because he was always done super early
we will see how our child does in a regular school and move if necessary -the same goes for elementary school - we moved to LI for the public school but if that is not a good fit - i will look into the gifted school

i don't think mine is gifted, different yes, but not gifted.
I don't know if I would have him tested on a preschool level though...but to be fair, I don't care much about preschool anyway. I just want these 5 years to be about fun.

I agree--I taught gifted courses for 12-16 year olds (who scored in the top .5%), and I would do the research about these schools--I strongly feel that the emphasis during that age should be on socialization and not on academics. I doubt there is any benefit to these schools.

Re: thoughts on "gifted" preschool, and getting your child tested...
My son is too young, but even if I thought he was "gifted", I would not have him tested or sent to a gifted preschool. I agree with the PP who said that at that age it is more about socialization then academics.
