Re: Thoughts on Homeschooling
WOW. Im speechless yet I have so much to say.
First of all, you have given homeschooling a whole new meaning for me, and I thank you for that.
when you asked NOW do you see it differently, I definitely said YES YES YES. especially in your scenario and what you have told us about your son and the schools not giving him what he should be getting.
In the case of special needs children, and your specific case, not only do I feel you ARE doing the best for him, I absolutely commend and admire you for being able to homeschool him, in addition to running your household and caring for your other children.
It's really sad that special needs children are pushed aside and not given the full attention they deserve.
I pray that you find a school/situation that will help you in making the best academic life for your son (not that I think he's NOT getting the best) but he deserves what other children get, a great, FREE public education, catering to his needs, whether academic or medical.
I hope my scattered thoughts made some sense.
God bless for you all that you do for your son. He's very lucky to have you as his mommy.

Re: Thoughts on Homeschooling
Just curious.....if you've already made the decision- why ask the question in the original post?
In your personal situation, your son's needs are better fulfilled with you at home- right now. Eventually, I would hope you bring his skills level up enough that you could send him back to school (in another district hopefully) so that as he gets older he will be able to socialize with children, adapt to new situations, and grow more independent from you.

Re: Thoughts on Homeschooling
I feel that when children are home schooled they miss out on one of the most important parts of school-socialization. Learning to get along and work with other children, even children they dislike, is a huge part of life.

Re: Thoughts on Homeschooling
To you and your son! Sounds like he is making great progress!!!!
I also want to say that I went to private school, and w/in that private school we had home schoolers come in 2x's/ week for a half a day to participate in "specials".
Both "girls" I was friendly with, were beyond smart- prob. at higher academic levels than we were learning on...They had and still have NO SOCIALIZATION issues AT ALL!!!
So from my experience these homeschooled children learned more/ got a better education than myself, who went to both private and public school!!!
Generally- alot has to do with the parent, as well as the child!

I just have to say that I think it's absolutely amazing what you are doing for your son! And I can't see how anyone who actually read the posts on this thread could disagree that you are doing what is best for your son, and doing an amazing job at that!
I think it's great that you have posted about this, because it's given me a whole different persepective on home schooling.

I was simply asking what her purpose was. Would the poll or responses influence her pov or is she trying to call attention to horrible school district practices/ Special Education rights- thats all.

Re: Thoughts on Homeschooling
my niece is homeschooled. She is 12 years old and has always been homeschooled. She is an actress (she was in The Stepford Wives). She is extremely social with her peers as she is involved in many other activities and she can also socialize well & is respectful of adults. She is also very smart for her age.
