The more I think about it, the more it digusts me honestly. I can't have respect for her being a porn star. IMO she is no role model for a child, there are plenty of other people who can read to my child. Yes, it would greatly bother me, even if MY child NEVER knew what she did for a living.

Oh for Fu**s sake. Seriously? Im more concerned about the sex offenders in my neighborhood than to care about some ex porn star reading to my children.

Let the girl read to the kids. Geez. she's not having sex with the kids.
And really, I don't know who she is... I'd assume that 1st and 3rd graders don't know either!
She's trying to do something good.... so she has a past.... she's out of the bizz and has good intentions. She seems to have a passion for helping kids and reading to them... I don't see a reason to take that away from her or the kids.

Nope not in the least bit. Think of all the politicians and people of stature who have fallen from grace. You wouldnt have thought twice about them reading to your children.
Im really not worried about people who own their past and make no excuses for themselves. Im more worried about those that pretend to be above reproach.

I'll bite...
Truth is... there's a good chance that somewhere some person reading to kids has been with hookers. There's no stopping that. There are people who had drug problems that are reading to them too. So if it's OK for a non-famous person, why should fame be any different?
Heck, you might even be asking a good friend to pick your kid up from school... and unbeknown to you they have been with a hooker before.
Now, if you have someone like Charlie Sheen in mind... mid crazy... then yes that is an issue. I wouldn't want someone who was acting crazy around my kids. His reputation is crazy...but for me, it's more about HOW he acts, the things he says, the drugs he's clearly on than it is about what he's done in the past. But also with someone like him.. his past just keeps re-occurring in the present so the unpredictable aspect of it also doesn't sit well with me.
Hugh Grant has a past with hookers.... and honestly I wouldn't mind him reading to my kid.
Heck some parents of kids have been with hookers and have a past... does that really mean they aren't equipped to be around any children? Even their own? I do understand the thinking that someone who's been with hookers or does porn has some sort of sexual problem/issues but I don't know that I'd necessarily say that spills into the area of children or child abuse.
We are talking about just reading to them in a group setting so that does factor into my decision... that and the fact that they have no clue who the person is and kids that young shouldn't know of the person's dark past. I'd hope my 1st or 3rd grader doesn't even know what a hooker or porn is forget about what the person did!!
For me, it depends more on their state of mind and well being.
Now talk about someone with a past of child abuse, any sort of molestation, rape, etc... ANY sexual crime where they took advantage of someone... that's a WHOLE other story and in that case then HELLL TO THE NO would I be ok with them reading to my kid OR anyone elses.
AND just to add... I wouldn't want someone acting like or dressed as a hooker or porn star reading to my kid... that's different. If this girl really quit the business and is acting the the realm of "normal" then I don't really have an issue with it, especially because the kids shouldn't even know about it.

Totally agree.
There are SOO many figures holding high positions who have really sketchy pasts and hide them. Heck they are even still doing things now and just sweep everything under the rug. They are more devious if you ask me.

The kids have NO idea who she is. Sounds like she's trying to make a better life for herself. I say let her do it. It's supervised by the teacher anyway. Why doesnt anyone get a 2 nd chance anymore?

I am not sure what age were the students she read to. I don't care if they are 6, I still feel the same.
But I ask this...
what happens when these students want to become her friend on facebook? Google to find her to find her page, etc?
well my 6 year old won't be on FB. Actually I don't want my kids to have FB until they are at least 13. And at that point, I don't think it would be appropriate for them to be friends with any teachers or just someone who read to them from a program. When my kids are old enough for FB I plan on having rules with it... and I only want them to be friends with their real true friends in real life... their peers. I'd also want it to be private and I'd be their friend as well.
As far as googling... IDK... I never once googled any of my teachers, let alone someone I would have met once who just read to me. Heck, I probably wouldn't even remember her name to be able to google her.
I'd assume if they are googling then they are older... I'm not picturing a 6 year old googling people... so if say my teen were to google her and find out about her past then I would consider it a teachable moment or an opportunity to have a mature discussion about her past and her as a person. I would teach my kid that even though she has a past that doesn't give my kid or anyone else the right to treat her differently because she still is a human being and deserves respect. I would also openly discuss porn and all with my kid. I would like to have a well rounded intelligent kid and don't plan on sheltering the facts of reality from them. Please don't take that the wrong way... because I don't plan on glorifying the porn industry either. But just because my kid encountered a porn star doesn't mean they are going to become one either.
ETA: I think that computer usage should be monitored by a parent... especially for a younger child. I don't plan on my kids each having their own computers or laptops... we will have 1 desktop family computer for all to use.
I just feel like, sometimes in life these things are going to happen... our kids are going to find out about this stuff at some point.... rather than to run around trying to stop it from happening we should use it as an opportunity to teach them right from wrong, about morals, how to treat people, etc. I see my kid finding out about this as more of an opportunity than anything else. That doesn't mean I won't have rules and they can run amok, doing anything, staying out all night long, etc. But life gives us these situations that we can use for good... and I plan on seizing the opportunity to do so.

good for her! I think her statement is worded PERFECTLY. She is not her past...and her past does not define her. being a porn star doesn't make her a pedophile. I think the fact that she chooses to participate in an educational program for children on her free time is inspiring and I think it's very bold of her to do it knowing she will be met with resistance. I give her big time kudos.

Really?? i am a librarian, work in a elementary school (i'm also a mom) and all i can think is-they couldn't find ANYONE else to come into do a read aloud??
i won't lie if my school said to me: "oh so and so the former porn star and BJ queen is coming in to do the read aloud for the kids" i would be shocked-the two in my mind do NOT connect with each other  i think it's weird and i would be a little disappointed with my school. but then again i;m conservative in most of my views and thoughts.

I have no idea who she is so I'd never know what she did. What does it matter if she's reading to children? It's not like she's going to act out a scene from her films in the middle of Clifford the Big Red Dog! Or dress the part. It would only be immature irresponsible parents who would give any inkling to kids what her past is.
Your kid's first grade teacher could be moonlighting on an S&M website for all you know.
I'd be more embarrassed if my DH were the one to out her in the middle of a school event.
I'd rather this girl read to my son than his all star football coach be in the locker room shower with him!

If she can't read, then neither can bartenders, tobacco executives, gun dealers, car dealers, etc.
The fact that it was in Compton does make a huge difference. Literacy rates are strongly correlated with poverty. We are spoiled by LI classroom and school libraries.
There isn't a lack of guest readers in Manhasset or Garden City, but I sure bet there is a shortage in Compton.
