Throwing food on the floor - a stage or a problem?

I am at my wits end - my son is at that stage where he wants to feed himself and if I try to feed him with a spoon, he smacks it away. Which is fine, I cut stuff up and put it on his high chair tray. But for the past week, I feel like he hasnt eaten a single meal because all he does is throw it on the floor. He will either swipe it all on the floor with one sweep of his arm, or, he will throw it piece by piece. Nothing I do is working - I have tried all different foods, I have said "NO" very sternly, I have waited until I was sure he was hungry. I am so frustrated that I just end up giving him formula so that I can be sure he at least is having some nutrition. Any suggestions?

I just call it life with a toddler. Still happening at almost 2. C'est la vie.

Steven hardly does this, and when he does, it means he's done. I say "OK, all done." and take him out.

Couldnt have said it better myself! When DS throws his food on the floor, I say "NO!" then take him out of the highchair and end his meal. And then he gets no treats after that.

My DD does this when she is done. It's our signal to clean up the tray and let her down.
