Throwing out so much formula
I strictly bottle feed and my doctor told me that once the baby starts a bottle but doesn't finish it, it can't be put back in the fridge and used for the next feeding because of bacteria that could form from the babies saliva. I feel like I waste so much formula. Just now DS was screaming for a bottle, (he drinks about 5 oz. at each feeding) he drank maybe an ounce and is now old cold! I tried keeping him up but he wasn't having it. So now I'll leave it out for an hour but if he doesn't get up, I have to toss it. Such a waste of money . Anyone else experience this?

Yup. been there. Next time, don't give him as much formula. Start it off at an ounce and then if he wants more, give him more, if he falls asleep, then you don't have to worry about wasting any.

Re: Throwing out so much formula
I use to make smaller bottle with powder because it was cheaper. Then I wrote down how much he ate for 3-4 months. I figured out his pattern and went from their. He would eat 2-6 oz and it was annoying. By 5 months I knew how much he would eat without waste.

Re: Throwing out so much formula
I threw out a ton, sometimes still do. I usually try to start out with small amounts in the bottle (maybe 4 oz) and just add more if she still is hungry. Its unfortunate, but it can be a guessing game.

Re: Throwing out so much formula
We still waste quite a bit of formula at 10.5 months too.

Re: Throwing out so much formula
I had to toss 3 pumped bottles the last few days - while it's not costing me anything, it's VERY frustrating b/c it takes a lot of effort to make that. As of today, I'm making 2 oz bottles to start and will add as he needs it.

Re: Throwing out so much formula
I never waste any formula here. Jack would drink from the Quart if I put a straw in it!

Re: Throwing out so much formula
We waste a lot of formula too. It's annoying, but I try to adjust when I do see patterns emerging. Like, she never drinks much for her 2nd bottle of the day b/c her first bottle she drinks a lot. So I make her 2nd bottle smaller (I use the powder).

Re: Throwing out so much formula
Yup, we did a lot of tossing, though now at 5 months he's pretty predictable with his eating.
You can keep the drunk bottle for an hour in the fridge and see if he wants more. After that it should go, though DS has gone 1.5 hours, no problem.
Also try making smaller bottles.
