Tile related question- bath reno

How much did your contractor charge to lay sq ft of tile? We are doing bath reno, and we initially wanted to tile only shower area, but I like how it came out, and ask contractor how much would it be to lay tile on the other wall ( around 60 sq ft). He came back with a quote of $400. That seems like A LOT to me. Need opinions! Thanks

Re: Tile related question- bath reno

We're in the process of doing the last bathroom in our house.

The contractor gave me a flat price for everything. I asked him if we decided not to tile the entire bathroom what the adjusted charge would be. He said he would knock $200 off.

Re: Tile related question- bath reno

My contractor had given me a fixed fee for my bathroom. It included pricing to tile a certain size and look. Apparently the smaller the tile, the more hours it takes hence more money. Other things that would increase the price are borders, tiling on a diagonal doing subway tiles, or if there are many odd cuts.

His price seems like its a days work 8 hours @ $50/hour. He may have an assistant so the $50 includes his fee and the assistant.

Re: Tile related question- bath reno

Well, initially he also gave me one price, but i now want to put tile on another wall. My tile is not small, i think 12x13, no pattern to speak of, and it is not mosaic. I think he is just trying to rip me off.Chat Icon I count it as around $7 per sq ft, which is a lot.

anyone else has any experience? thanks

The place where we purchased our floor tile starts at $7 for instal so that doesn't seem so far fetched. See if he would be willing to do it for $250 or $300 since he is still there.

the thing is that we have tile already ( since we bought too much), the price is only for his labor. he was thinking that since we have extra tile already and do not need to buy more, we would accept any price from him.Chat Icon b/c we would not want to waste tile. But it is too expensive, i think i might sell this tile on ebay, it is beautiful and it seems like i have plenty. now i am thinking he told us to buy much more to begin with, so that we got into this trapChat Icon

Well try negotiating with him with whatever price you think is fair or call another tile person for a price and see what they say.

Also before you sell all your tile I suggest keeping a few just in case any tiles crack in your bathroom and need to be replaced.

Re: Tile related question- bath reno

I would try negotiating with him. I work in construction and as a pricing rule it def would have been cheaper if he priced it up from but any changes to the original contract usually get more markup.....that just the norm in the business.

I was in Home Depot the other day and noticed that they had signs up for tile installation through their vendors starting at $5.27/sq foot. Not sure how good they are, what the warranties are or anything....
