Time Magazine's cover of Chris Christie raises eyebrows
People at work were talking about it so I googled it. Did you see the cover?

Re: Time Magazine's cover of Chris Christie raises eyebrows
I don't think much of it being that the Elephant is the GOPs symbol and that it is the "elephant in the room" - will he, or will he not run?

That's exactly what I thought... the weight issue would not have even occurred to me.

Time Magazine's cover of Chris Christie raises eyebrows
I get what they were trying to do- they probably wanted to incorporate both the GOP symbol and the expression (which is relevant for many).
But I have a feeling a lot of people (especially his supporters) will not get the wordplay, and be offended.

Additionally, he has recently had gastric bypass, so he will be losing a lot of the weight.

Time Magazine's cover of Chris Christie raises eyebrows
I think they did it to be a play on words and meant both. If it had been a democrat on the cover who wasn't heavy, I wouldn't think they'd be putting a headline of "the donkey in the room" or something like that. I do not like CC at all but I find the continuous comments on his weight to be out of control. Focus on his politics and his stance on issues, not on his size.

This is a jab at his weight. They can defend their play on words all they want but the pic says it all. More than half this country is, by medical standards, overweight. Enough with picking on this guy. This cover was in poor taste and, quite frankly, mean.

I would never have thought they were going for his weight. Elephant I the room is a catch phrase for something obvious that no one wants to address so I just immediately thought of that but now I see how it can be taken that way...

I don't see how they could have published this and NOT realized that it might be taken in this manner.

Agreed. As soon as I saw the cover, I understood it as a clear double entendre.

Re: Time Magazine's cover of Chris Christie raises eyebrows
I think it's clever in that it's a common phrase meaning something that no one wants to talk about but it also refers to his political party, and truth be said he is the only "elephant" in the room i.e. the only serious Republican contender right now.
It's unfortunate that he is heavy set as well-and based on that they should have passed on the headline.

Exactly
Of course they will not admit it but come on it is pretty obvious!

Had no clue they might be referring to his weight. I guess I'm a bit naive.

Re: Time Magazine's cover of Chris Christie raises eyebrows
I think it means three things:
1) the elephant is for the Republican Party 2) Chris Christie is disliked by much of the Republican Party and therefore would have a huge fight ahead of him if he runs (hence the headline about winning over the Republican Party) 3)he 's obese...the magazine absolutely knew what they were doing when they made this cover...and look, it worked bc we're all talking about it. (Although I think it's 100% wrong of them!!)
FWIW, I'm conservative and I can't stand Chris Christie... I dont think he's electable and I know I'm not alone. (I've actually heard people suggest if he ran, it would be as a democrat! )

Agreed. It's meant to be taken either way, but they still have plausible deniability to say "Oh gosh! We didn't mean ANYTHING about his weight!"

ITA. It was definitely meant as a double entendre. No question Time knew some people would recognize that they were (not so) subtly calling him an elephant referring to his size. They just knew they could hide behind the also valid "is he running or not" and GOP symbol explanations.

Re: Time Magazine's cover of Chris Christie raises eyebrows
It's a triple entendre!
1. Elephant = GOP 2. Elephant in the Room = no one knows exactly what to do with him, and they're not talking about it 3. His weight. Clearly the dark shadowed side shot of him is meant to portray his heaviness.
Clever on their part if you ask me! Everyone is talking about it

Re: Time Magazine's cover of Chris Christie raises eyebrows
It's seriously so sad that everyone picks on his weight. Is that really the worst he can be? What about his character? He stood up for his state and was there during a state of emergency and yet they pick on his weight. Terribly sad.
