Timed Intercourse anyone?

Hi Ladies- as you know, I am new to this board. I have been seeing an RE since March (I'm 35) and after my testing, they told me that my insurance will not cover IUI until i have been on Clomid and timed intercourse for 6 months (therefore, no IUI until September Chat Icon )

HSG: Clear, no blockages
No PCOS, no fibroids
Sperm Analysis: Count/Mobility no problems

Diagonsis: unexplained infertility - no kidding!!!

So, in Month #1 March, I did Clomid (50 mg a day) - no response to clomid (follies not big enough), no HCG trigger shot to bring on ovulation

Month #2 April: I did Clomid (100 mg a day) - a response to Clomid (follies big enough), HCG trigger shot to bring on ovulation, and timed intercourse next 3 days. . . . progesterone low so suppositories .. . then BFN!! Stop progesterone, AF came.

So, I am back for May - just finished Clomid and back on Thurs to measure follies to see if i am ready.

Did anyone else go this route? Thoughts on success rates? So mad about my insurance issues but i don't have extra $ to pay out of pocket sonner.

Have you asked your Dr to write a letter on your behalf. Every insurance company has "rules" which can magically disappear after a compelling letter from a Dr.

ETA: I was told IUI increase your chances 2-3% over the traditional way. Also maybe you should be having $ex for longer than 3 days. Are you using OPK's or saliva monitor? Do you get fertile cervical fluid? If not, you may want to try pre seed-you can buy it online.

Unfortunately, we tried that route and my insurance co. won't budge. I also found out that they will only allow 20 clomid pills a year and since i have exceeded that, i have to pay out of pocket like $100 a month! I hate insurance companies! Chat Icon

I think I will try longer than the 3 days they told me. unfortunately, OPK don't work for me - i don't get a surge line so i get my blood work done and vaginal ultrasounds to see if i am ovulating.

I am not sure if a get fertile cervical fluid - the doctor hasn't mentioned that. Thanks for the tip re: pre seed-i will check it out!

Re: Timed Intercourse anyone?

As far as the timed intercourse, I have never done it so have no experience.

What I am confused about is - if you don't have PCOS why aren't you ovulating? Or do you ovulate and the Clomid is just to create more follies?

Do they do a sono after the trigger to make sure you ovulated and all eggs were released?

Other than that, it's probably just timing. I'm assuming they are going to start you on progesterone right after trigger this month. But, it can take a few months to get PG even if everything is perfect. I'm thinking you are just going to have to wait it out.

I am also confused since I was convinced esp reading these boards that i had PCOS - but my period is nearly perfect of when it starts every month, flow, etc. So they say def. not PCOS but don't know what it is.

So, I think i ovulated and the Clomid is just to create more follies. . .

After the trigger they haven't done a sono - just bloodwork and confirmed ovulation. i am so confused all the time (a common feeling i know!)

I am scheduled to go in on Thurs to see if my follies are big enough (stopped Clomid on Sat) and probably trigger so i will definitely be asking more questions this month!

Also look into the mail order pharmacies. I have heard good things about American and Freedom. You can also order from European pharmacies and it is a lot cheaper, if you're comfortable. Get quotes for 90 days and 30 days sometimes they are the same price. Def. look into pre-seed as Clomid dries up your fluid. GLChat Icon

ETA:

My DR also did a post coital test(they look at your fluid after 8 or so hrs after having $ex) and see if the sperm is still alive. That is important obviously.

Re: Timed Intercourse anyone?

have you considered getting a 2nd opinion?

I was with a doctor that in the end, I was so frustrated with the practice, and her quick to diagnose me without running any tests, that I left here and found another doctor, who DID test and monitors me.

Re: Timed Intercourse anyone?

yes I agree with MrsRBK. You should get sonos. Also my Dr(supposedly an expert in PCOS) says you don't have to have any symptoms. You would need a glucose test to tell if you have it.
