tip for manicurist

So my nails cost me $28 every 3 weeks. I get my acrylic fill in with French gel polish. I usually tip $12. Today the girl getting her nails done and got a full set of French put on and tipped $3. I was wondering what is the average people tip and am I over tipping!?!?

Re: tip for manicurist

20% whatever I get done. For $28 I would give $6.

I get a gel fill in every 3 weeks with a polish change and it costs $30. I just give him $40 and tell him to keep the change.

I actually saw this over the weekend when I was getting my nails done, the woman next to me only tipped $2 and I thought that was rather low.

I also tip 20% of the service total -- for hair, nails, makeup application, waxing, etc.

I would just give $35 even in that situation so $7 tip.

You're very generous. I typically tip a few dollars. My nails take 20 min or so. I also don't tip 20% on hair when services are $250-300. No friggen way

I get a regular manicure and regular pedicure. I tip $6 for pedi and $4 for mani so $10 total. During the holidays I'll give a bit more.

Re: tip for manicurist

I usually give $5 for a shellac mani ($25) and I always give $5 for my pedi ($35).

ETA: If I do a regular mani I'll give $3 whatever the cost is - some places are just $8 for a reg mani or I've paid up to $15 for a reg mani.

Re: tip for manicurist

Honestly it depends for me...on my mood and if it is someone who normally does my nails or if I am running to a new place quickly but in either case I over tip. For the simple fact that they are paid so poorly (probably not even minimum wage) if I can afford to help them a bit I do.

I always over tip. These ladies are usually immigrants and don't make a lot of money.

For gel mani and regular pedi 10-12. I hate that most places have diff ppl do each service so you have to split the tip up.

My mom was friends with a guy whose gf worked in a salon and let me tell you they are paid very well. She could walk out in one night with over $300 in tips. She worked in one of those run down looking salons.

I usually get a gel and a reg pedi costs about $40 I tip $5-8 depending if the service was good or not.

Re: tip for manicurist

When I get a mani/pedi I tip $10 - for just a $7 manicure that takes 15 minutes - I tip $3 or $4

For a full french gel - that takes awhile. And she obviously does a great job for it to last you 3 weeks - I'd probably tip $10

Re: tip for manicurist

If I get a spa pedicure and regular manicure that is about $70 and I tip between $20-25
If I get a spa pedicure and spa manicure that's about $90 and I tip $30

I go to the same girl for many years, I never run to a random nail place and only see her exclusively. I also give her $100 as a Christmas gift every year.

There is also a massage girl who gives a 10-15 minute massage which is included in the spa pedicure and I always tip her at least $5-8

Like others have said they don't make much money, in fact most manicurist work on tips alone.
