tipping camp counselors
How much are you supposed to tip camp counselors?
my son goes 3 days a week- half days.
I think there are 6 counselors. 1 head counselor and the rest are teenagers or young kids (YMCA camp).
eta: just for the record, i think it's weird to tip camp counselors. Not weird, but are we really tipping everyone these days because it seems like it.

Re: tipping camp counselors
It's crazy how many people you have to tip these days. I received an email from DD's camp with tip suggestions, here is it:
Suggestions: Group Leader (GL) $6.50 to 7.00 per week
Counselor (C) $5.00 to $5.50 per week
Jr. Counselor (JC) $3.25 to $3.75 per week
C.I.T. $1.75 to $2.25 per week
Swim Instructor: $1.75 to $2.75 per week
Bus Driver: $2.75 per week for 2 ways
Bus Counselor: $1.50 to $2.00 per week for 2 ways
It's over $300 for me to tip since DD takes a bus and has private swim lessons...oyyy veyyy...lol

Re: tipping camp counselors
It winds up costing a lot at the end of the summer.... and as much as it kills me, I realise that counselors don't make very much money for taking really good care of my daughter all summer long.

Re: tipping camp counselors
I was a camp counselor and although it was a really fun job, you really don't get paid a lot.
I would definitely tip the camp counselor, and the bus driver!. I know it's a lot of money at the end of the summer, and most of us don't budget for it, but they took care of yours kid(s) all summer.

Re: tipping camp counselors
I know this will seem high but I gave each counselor $30, the assistant supervisor $25 and the the supervisor $20. I had 6 counselors, 2 A/S and 2 S. This was for 2 kids. I did not do the sports, music or arts counselors. My kids went 5 days a week, half days for 7 weeks.

This. Camp counselors get paid next to nothing. When I did it (about 10 years ago) I got paid $1000 for the entire summer. That's 5 days a week, 8hrs a day with no breaks, ever. From the second the kids arrive to the second they go home you are with them. You are responsible for keeping them safe, keeping them entertained, and keeping them on schedule. Feeding them lunch, making sure they stay hydrated, breaking up fights, wiping tears. I really don't think its fair to put tipping camp counselors into "the tipping is out of control" category. You can't compare the camp counselor to the person who gets your donut and coffee at DD.

so even the junior counselors you'd tip? my son has 6 counselors and 1 head counselor. The 6 counselors are like 14 years old. He goes to camp 3 days a week from 9-12. His bus driver is me.
So i should tip all 7 counselors $50 each? for 3 half days a week?!?!?!?
I understand they don't get paid much. But they're not like waitresses either who are working FOR tips.

Re: tipping camp counselors
I asked my babysitter, who is a counselor where DH went for the past few summers, and she said $10pp was plenty. I gave the head counselor $20 and the junior counselors and CIT $10 each.

Actually they are pretty much working for tips. The money from the camp was nothing compared to the tips.
