Tipping the title guy.....

My lawyer emailed me my closing costs and also said it was customary to tip the title guy $100. To be honest, our title costs aren't exactly cheap....Chat Icon ....but, my question is, would you still tip even after all the money you're shelling out?

Thanks....Chat Icon

PS No one we've asked has ever heard of tipping the "title guy".

You'll get mixed answers on this...
we tipped our guy, but I also work for the title company so I knew it was pretty customary.

Re: Tipping the title guy.....

Even though you are paying the title company all that money the title closer is not making any part of that, they only get the tips that they receive at the closing. The tip is usally $100-$150 and is something the buyers usually give but at many closings both the sellers & buyers will give a tip.

Re: Tipping the title guy.....

we didn't tip anyone at the closing. we didn't know we were "suppose to" and in my opinion they are doing their job..why tip them!

Re: Tipping the title guy.....

It's pretty standard. We followed our lawyer's advice on this.

Hmm our lawyer didn't mention it to us and honestly I never heard of it. It was a co-op and the title guy wasn't physically present so maybe it was different for us?

That is correct there is no title company at a co-op closing because there is no title of real property being transferred just personal property (the stock).

It is true they are doing their job but they aren't getting paid for it--it is a very weird industry some title closers add it to your bill some of them just hope that they will receive a tip (which is the wrong word for it because a tip is above what you would receive as your pay and they receive no pay). It is very customary and some attorneys just don't know they should advise their clients to give the title closer a "tip".

Keep YOUR money for something in your nice new house, you'll need it. Tipping has gotten way out of hand.

The mortgage guy told us we were supposed to and we anticipated doing so but I didn't even know who it was so we didn't tip!

We did...our lawyer told us it was customary...I think we did $150.
Honestly, with all the money you're shelling out that day...that $150 seemed more like $1.50Chat Icon

Re: Tipping the title guy.....

Our lawyer wrote down on a piece of paper $250 and said this is what the title person gets. I took the pen and crossed out the $250 and said this is what we're giving.

Re: Tipping the title guy.....

We were also told it is customary by our lawyer as well as my MIL who is a RE broker. We tipped $100 and were told it would help ensure that our title got recorded quickly.

Jeez, it seems like everyone has their hands out to get our money as it is, and we're supposed to tip this title person too?

Crazy.

While I agree that tipping is out of control we asked around - my parents have bought 6 places over the years and from them as well as everyone else we asked about this did say it was customary to tip and that it was not a new concept.
