Tips - Newspaper Delivery?
If you get a newspaper delivered to your house, how much do you tip the newspaper delivery person?
Thanks!

Re: Tips - Newspaper Delivery?
We are NOT tipping ours. We may have considered it, but the self addressed (not stamped) envelope was over the top. Greed at its worst.

how else would the delivery person get a tip then i personally think it's wrong and sad not to tip because of this. they throw the newspapers out the window. they'd have to get out of the car and check each and every mailbox every day of the month otherwise.
i believe newsday supplies them with the envelopes. (not 100% sure).
i will gladly tip my person--probably $20-30. they come out rain or snow so that i don't have to go to the store and buy it. i will mail her a check in the self addressed envelope as i have done (and she has done) each and every year.

You know, I am torn about this. It's a nice thing to do around the holidays, but I don't like the envelope they give you. I also don't get tipped for doing my job (I'm a teacher) so why should they get tipped for doing theirs? I am unsure about what to do.

Yes, Newsday provides them with an envelope and it was already inside the paper the first week of December. Even though many people do not get tipped for their jobs, I guess the tip is just to show an appreciation for the services rendered. It really depends on the household if they want to provide it or not.
ETA>>> $20-30 is good.

I don't get tipped for my job either. Are you a high school teacher? Most teachers in the elementary schools get a combined gift for a GC to a store at my school. We all chip in and its costing me 20 bucks this year for 2 kids. I don't mind, i think the teachers deserve a tip. MY DH thinks its ridiculous. He also thinks it's ridiculous to tip the mailman because my DH works at the PO but doesn't get tipped for his job, because he isn't a carrier. As for the newspaper delivery person, i do believe that they deserve a tip. They get out and start delivering at 2 AM in the FREEZING cold or snow or rain. They don't make a lot of money to do it either, it's usually a second job, and they do it 7 days a week. I'm a Sunday only and i tip $15.00

Re: Tips - Newspaper Delivery?
our delivery person changed FIVE times this year, each time they add a note saying they are our new carrier. The person we have now started Thanksgiving week, I'd hate to give nothing but its not like she delivered for me all year. I'm not sure what I'm doing yet.

Re: Tips - Newspaper Delivery?
Traditionally, newspaper delivery people receive tips at the holidays. Some professions do, some don't. The newspaper provides them with the envelopes, for OUR convenience and safety--it's not a reflection of the hardworking delivery person's "greed."
Our newspaper delivery guy delivers our NYT and WSJ everyday, is never late and I have SEEN him (as I walk to my car at 6:30 AM) walking through the rain and freezing cold. We tipped him 50 bucks--because of his services, we do not have to walk our lazy azzes to the store 7 days a week to get the paper.
It's the HOLIDAYS for crying out loud...
Sheesh...

Teachers should not be allowed to receive "tips." It would be ethically wrong to take monetary gifts from the parents of children that you educate. The same with nurses, attorneys, doctors, social workers etc. If you can't see the difference between the two professions (newspaper delivery services and teaching) then
For the record, I am a HS teacher.

Re: Tips - Newspaper Delivery?
We pay newsday directly for the cost of the paper and delivery and have the option to include a tip or tip the carrier directly if desired. I always assumed the envelope was a subtle way of indicating that IF we were tipping they preferred it directly. Also, we used to pay the carrier for the entire thing and they paid Newsday, so the envelopes were provided as a convenience then, and have just continued. I give a small tip every two months (at the same time I pay Newsday, but the tip goes direct) and I also give an additional tip at Christmas. We've always had great delivery with no problems. I figure if anyone is willing to take a crappy job like getting up that early in all kinds of weather day after day they really need the money and will appreciate the tip alot.

I am planning on tipping, but he has already not delivered our paper twice in the two weeks that we have gotten delivery of the paper. It won't be the greatest tip, but I will give something or else my next paper will be in a puddle somewhere!

I think the teacher gift is just that...a gift. I'm a teacher, I spend well over $100 on gifts for my students for the holidays, plus buy them supplies to make their parents a gifts for every occassion all year. I take care of them during a day and consider them a huge part of my life and I'm sure they feel the same way about me. Please don't call it a "tip." We're a non-tipping professsion. Wouldn't you want to give someone who has such a big role in your child's life a gift, even if it's a thoughtful card or handmade? While it's generous that your class parents are collecting $ to make it a group gift, it is not required. I told my class parents a long time ago to stop this since every family was then giving me an additional gift on top of that, but they still do it.... out of the goodness of their hearts.

Re: Tips - Newspaper Delivery?
I'm in the same dilemma. Sunday only. I asked that they deliver to the steps or at least near them. Not even close. The downstairs tenant took it in the beginning. No idea what to do.

Sorry, i consider it a tip. It's not required just like every other tip that people give isnt required. I do it because i feel like i want to not because i have to and i consider it no different than the tip i give my mailman. He works hard just like the teachers, and the hairdresser. And, i do give my childs teacher a gift at the end of the year. I feel that my childs teacher deserves GC that we give. Some of us can't afford it, but i do it because i think she deserves it. I used to give her a gift in addition but with the troubling times and the economy the way it is, i just do the chip in as do many parents these days.

First of all, when I say "tip" I mean a thank you in some form for performing the job that I am hired to do. Secondly, I absolutely disagree with you that these professions should not be allowed to receive a thank you of some kind, monetary or otherwise. A job is a job and it is not more appropriate to offer a thanks for some professions and not others.

Re: Tips - Newspaper Delivery?
We only tip at the holidays, $20 to $30. Considering that it took, literally, 4 months for us to get each of our papers each day, I find those tip envelopes insulting and over the otp thoughout the year. It's different at the holidays. Lately we've gotten all our paper plus so that makes me more willing to tip.

Re: Tips - Newspaper Delivery?
Wow...whatever happened to "tis the season for giving"? or saying thank you for a job well done?
I appreciate the envelope with the address since I have no idea where my newspaper deliveryman lives and I give him a $30 tip. I also tip: the mailman (with a gift card) the garbagemen (cash) my doctors office (cookies and edible arrangements) and if I had children, I would get the teacher a gift.
It's all about showing appreciation....Merry Christmas!

We do automated billing for Newsday and DH includes a "tip" every single week. I ignore the envelopes that come twice a year (once at the holidays, and one other time).

We'll just have to agree to disagree. IMO, people employed in the social services should absolutely not receive/accept monetary "thank yous" or "tips." A nice card or some cookies is one thing, gift cards and cash is another.
edited to add "accept."
