Tips for Commuters Going Through Penn Station
To help ease some the tension during this impossible commute the Long Island Railroad has implemented a plan at Penn Station.
To Purchase a Ticket:
Tickets can only be purchased at the 34th Street entrance only. All other entrances are for ticket holders. Ticket Holder Entrances:
Commuters going to--Eastern Queens, Hicksville, Huntington, Port Jefferson, Oyster Bay, and Hempstead & West Hempstead--use the 8th Avenue and 33rd Street Subway entrance.
Commuters going to--Northern Queens, Ronkonkoma & Port Washington--use the 8th Avenue and 33rd Street Amtrak entrance.
Commuters going to--Southeast Queens, Babylon, Montauk, Long Beach, & Far Rockaway --use 33rd Street between 7th & 8th Avenues.
Commuters going to--Woodside, Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, & Jamaica--use the 7th Avenue entrance.

I don't see why you can't just buy tickets on the train. Those lines to buy a ticket are nuts.
What are they going to do if I don't have my ticket on the train? Throw me off?

I think it's b/c the trains are over crowded and the ticket guys can't get through the trains.

No, you can't even get on a train, or into penn station, without a ticket - they're barracading the entrances and checking at street level.

Re: Tips for Commuters Going Through Penn Station
It says on the LIRR that Tickets should be purchased before boarding trains. Tickets purchased on board trains will cost substantially more.
I wonder what they mean by "substantially more". Since the fees aren't posted on the website... they can't be more than what they normally are (3-5 buks more a ticket).
This is the MTA's way of getting their cash just in case the ticket agent can't make his way through the train.
Screw them.

They are checking for tickets at the street level? That blows.
I snuck onto a train yesterday. Went in through the ticket entrance. When i got down the stairs there was a guy saying "just go ahead and board your train - you don't need a ticket".
This is right after at the top of the stairs I asked an MTA employee if I needed to buy a ticket and after he said yeah... he got angry with me when I told him i am just going to buy one on the train.

From 33rd to World Trade? It shouldn't take more than 10 minutes total, but that is under normal conditions.

He got angry because that's plain obnoxious. There are tens of thousands of people trying to get on trains at one place. They need to be orderly and organized - all these rules are put in place for a reason.
