tips for hanging nursery wallpaper border? update: we did it!

DH and i are going to attempt hanging the wallpaper border this weekend and have no idea what we are doing. it's pre-pasted, and from what i have read, we should be able to just dunk it in water and put it up.

any tips on how to keep it straight (we have a line where the paint color changes as a guide) and not bubbly?

Re: tips for hanging nursery wallpaper border?

I just did a wallpaper border in my sons big boy room. It was really easy (it was prepasted, and like you said, just dipped in water), but I made out well because we have a chair rail in the room and I just put it right on top of the chair rail.

If you have nothing to line it up against, I would take one of those laser level things and mark a straight line in chalk or something that can guide you and then you can easily wipe it off as you hang it.

The room I did was small and had closets and windows that broke up the wall, so the pieces I had to cut to hang weren't too large. The one large wall I did, I made sure DH was there to do one end up while I did the other end.

Here's a preview... We're still not 100% done with the room, but we're getting there:

question - did you measure and pre-cut each piece or did you cut once you put it up and got to the corners?

I kind of unrolled the amount I needed for the section, and then hung it. Where the ends met a border, like the window or door frame, I used an box-cutter knife to trim the edge of the wallpaper straight against the edge. Does that make sense?

i bet you could use painting tape on the walls too to mark off straight lines

Re: tips for hanging nursery wallpaper border?

We used a chalk line and instead of dipping it in water we wet it with a sponge

yeah, i'm kind of hesitant to dunk the whole thing in water but wasn't sure if just wetting the one side would be enough...

Re: tips for hanging nursery wallpaper border?

I you've never done it before, it might be hard to use the whole roll all together. You might have an easier time if you cut strips to be just about the length you need and then just trim off the bit of excess. You can dunk the whole piece in water -- don't worry about getting the non-pasted side wet. It actually works better that way, as the glue gets wetter. Once you start putting it on the wall, use a clean sponge and keep wiping/smoothing to get the bubbles & wrinkles out. You will see glue being pushed out from behind the paper, but that's okay. Just keep wiping and rinsing the sponge in clean water. As long as you get the bubbles & wrinkles out, it will look great and stay up for a long time. Enjoy doing it! It's really pretty easy. we did it! well, almost done...

i have a spot behind the door and around the light switch left to do, but slowly this room is coming together!

we need to align the furniture as some legs are on the carpet, some are not, and the room in general is not perfectly straight leaving it looking ever so slightly crooked. Chat Icon

i found that it was easier to overlap under rather than over when it came to the uneven corners, but only figured that out on the last one Chat Icon !
