tips for how to deal with a dog that steals
Does anyone have any tips? Yogi steals all day everyday. It's awful! He is an attention seeking dog and wants undevided attention when our son is awake (when he is sleeping, Yogi dosen't steal). He usually takes our son's toys (leggos, balls, stuffed animals/toys, etc) but on some occassions he steals our shoes. We tried training but the techniques were learned didn't really work with Yogi. We've tried offering him food and he ends up stealing more b/c he wants the food. We tried shaking a can of coins but that only got him to drop the item and didn't do much to prevent him from taking it in the first place. Can anyone help?

Try getting right in his face and saying "NO" very sternly.
Other than that, I got nothing This is why Neil trained Cosmo and will train our new pup as well.

Sorry, I really don't have much advise either. Just letting you know you are not alone, LOL! Layla does the same thing. It is definitely for attention. I know it's sometimes annoying. I just keep taking away whatever she has and say no to her. The only thing I can suggest is that you put away everything within his reach so you minimize what he can steal. I shut our son's door so she can't get into his closet.
Good luck!

I spray Maggie with a water bottle. She used to jump up on the table and the counters. I would sit on the couch with the bottle and spray her from there (ha!). It def did the trick. If you use it, just make sure it is a hard spray and you have to commit to doing it (not just showing the bottle)

if he steals something, will he destroy it or just carry it around until you notice him? If he doesnt chew it, I would say completely ignore him. give him attention when he is chewing and playing with his own toys.
I am doing this with my dog. He loves chewing Katies toys so I make sure to make a huge deal (even if i have to get up or go out of my way) to praise him when he is chewing the appropriate items.

It depends. Some things he steals and then comes up to me to show me that he has it. Then he runs away. He dosen't mean to destroy things, but he ends up chomping on it b/c he is excited and thinks its a game. other times (mostly with the shoes) he steals them and destroys them.
