To all the people that had pavers done or thought about pavers
I got what I felt was a ridiculously cheap quote for a pavers job yesterday. It was about $5.60 a square foot and I think I could knock the price down even more if I set up a second interview.
Most pavers quotes I got ranged between $9 and $12 a square foot.
I am curious as to what people here paid for pavers. I am mainly looking to do my driveway but he quoted me a patio in pavers and that was about the same (about $5.30 a square foot).
So I guess I am asking if anybody got any great deals with a pavers contractor. Granted this guy doesn't have a huge company, more like a father & son team. I am just trying to figure out if this is legit or not. Maybe he is just hungry for a job, as I felt going in to this I would be getting a very wide range of quotes.
Obviously I would not pay them anything until at least the start of the job and hold off as much of the final payment as I can until the job is finished. I was going to do blacktop since I thought pavers were out of my budget (I can get blacktop for under $3.00 a square foot). But if I can get pavers for not too much more I would do this.
Thanks in advance.

Re: To all the people that had pavers done or thought about pavers
Are your quotes including labor or just materials?
The lowest we were quoted was 5.50 and the highest was around 9 for materials alone.
We ultimately went with a natural stone for our back patio and belgian block for the apron & border of our driveway with pea gravel instead of blacktop (we're doing a forward addition in a couple of years that would require us ripping up the driveway, so it wasn't worth us doing the blacktop yet until that's completed.)

It includes labor and excavation of my existing blacktop.
I guess I would just feel a little better if there were other people out there that got a similar deal so I know it's less of a chance it's a scam.
Oh one other question, how do they install pavers. This contractor said they actually pour sand and then place the pavers on top then pour sand in between the pavers afterwards.
When I asked how they don't sink if there is no concrete sub-base, he says they don't move using this method because the pavers are so closely locked together they can't move.

That is really, really cheap. I have a friend who is pricing stamped concrete right now and the best quote she got was $7 a sq ft. Maybe ask for some references, see if he is listed with the BB and make sure he is licensed??

Can't help you with a quote - but I can ask my parents as they just had this whole thing done.
What you wrote above is correct. After they had the pavers done, the guys told my dad to continue to push the leftover sand around and fill in the cracks.

I just got a written estimate for now. I am still talking to more contractors, have appointments all through the weekend.
If I am serious about using him, i'll bring him back get more info about the company and knock down the price some more.
