Re: to any best friend's dog training alumni...
Sorry....I don't have any experience with best friends dog training. But i wanted to ask you how you liked the training. Did it work? DH and i were thinking of using them. Although we loved our last trainer and our shelter offers free training for basic commands, i wanted more for this pup. I want off leash training as well. God forbid she runs out the door or gets out of the gate. My dad has a 2YO westie he is thinking of using best friends for too. I see that you have smaller dogs so i was wondering how you liked the training. TIA

you will feel very comfortable there. Everyone is there for the ame reasons!
I dont go to the classes anymore bc I am a SAHM now ans DH gets home to late to make the wed class. So I have nowhere to bring the baby. We used to go to the Sun classes but we are just too busy lately

I think I may start going to the Sunday classes. We wouldn't get home in time for the wed. classes. Who was your trainer?

I went this wednesday! I don't know how my work schedule will be but i'm gonna try my best to get wednesday nights off. I'm gonna be going on Saturday morning this week too. If you see a beautiful white pitbull with a muzzle going crazy, yeah that's me and my Jameson haha.

Re: to any best friend's dog training alumni...
john was my trainer... my days off rotate and i won't have weekends off for a few months, so right now the wed evening classes will work best for me. i'll let you ladies know when i start going on the weekends and for luckysmom... i loved the training. there is a lot of controversy because of the collars they use, and it is quite expensive so i had my doubts. but after posting on here and getting so many positive responses about the training, i went for it. and let me tell you, it was worth every penny. i had some bigger issues with quinn and ava that drove me nuts... ava PULLED nonstop through walks and quinn tried to chase every car that would pass us, plus they were both complete nuts when someone came to the door or into the house - and with quinn, if it was a stranger, there would be nipping. i had anxiety over anyone coming up to us on the street, or any time i had any kind of worker come to the house - electrician, cablevision, plumber, anything. they still aren't perfect, it will take time and practice, but even if they remain exactly how they are now, after i don't know - 5 sessions maybe - it will have been worth every single penny. they have come a long, long way. i had my mom over for their last training session, because she walks them a lot and i wanted her to see how it worked and what to do. she was watching them with the trainer and i for 2 minutes and was like "i can't even believe it's the same dogs". i definitely would recommend the training, without hesitation.

I'll most likely be there on Wednesday this week, if I don't go (i don't know my work schedule this week yet) my husband will definitely be there and he's a fellow cop Like I said, we have a white pitbull that's muzzled and will probably go crazy so it'll be pretty hard to miss him haha.

Prong collars? I know a lot of people who use them and when fitted and used properly (in conjunction with effective training) they insist they are safe and not cruel.
If we had pulling problems, I would consider it myself since our dog's build is pretty powerful.
I've only read "The Other End of the Leash" but it was by far the best book I read on understanding dog behavior and how to apply that to my situation:
Patricia McConnell books
That might be helpful in addition to your training and socializing time!

My neighbor used them and his dog wears a "shock" collar and he uses a remote to give him a "tingle" (as he calls it) when needed. Do all the trainers there push this? I really wanted to use them but do not want to use the collar

yes, they use shock collars but it's all how you use it. as long as you don't "abuse" the shock collar, it can be a very positive thing. it doesn't hurt, it's annoying if anything! they all only use that. it's what works best. there's a trainer there that has trained his dog 4 different styles and that's what works best. right now, we're using the prong collar and shock collar on jameson cause she's a "special case" she's very stubborn
