Today's pet peeve..
...people who use big words when they write to make themselves seem smart. What ends up happening is, they misuse the words and look like morons.
Im thinking, "OK Roget, you can put the thesaurus away now!"

I already edited my own post a couple times because my verb didn't match my subject. I'm a dork.

Re: Today's pet peeve..
Agreed, actually, in grad school, I was told I'd never amount to anything because I believed in writing things that people could understand. Listen, I took a course once in grad school where every, single reading we did for the class, the author had MADE WORDS UP! Apparently, what they had to say was so earth shattering that there were no existing words to do it justice

James Joyce talks about "Moo Cows" and is thought to be one of the greatest authors in history, according to some. I'll never understand that rhyme or reason behind some 'notable authors', nor, behind some posters

Re: Today's pet peeve..
I have helped a number of people with applications to various graduate school programs. They asked me to read essays and edit them. I always tell them to simplify their language. Less is more. If it is not in your every day vocabulary, then don't use it.

THANK YOU! However, if they're going to school for musicology, less is apparently stupid and made up is apparently genius

I have a HUGE issue when people spell grammar this way: GRAMMER.
I do have an APA manual that I refer to from time to time. I am far from perfect myself, but come on...GRAMMER????

You arent going to like this:
Main Entry: ir·re·gard·less Function: adverb Pronunciation: "ir-i-'gärd-l&s Etymology: probably blend of irrespective and regardless : REGARDLESS usage Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that "there is no such word." There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead.
I think people have misused the word so often that it became part of the language.

If someone wants to use it, i'm just going to assume that they mean "with regard" then!
acceptable or not- i think it makes even the most intelligent person sound foolish.

Re: Today's pet peeve..
It always bothers me when people say "I could care less." when they really mean "I *couldn't* care less"
If you could care less, that means you do care. If you couldn't care less, it means that you care so little for it, you cannot possibly care any less.
Quote from the movie "The Princess Bride"... "I do not think it means what you think it means." :)
