Toddler constipation
James is so backed up. He tries and tries and tries to go, but all we get are little rabbit pellets or the occasional golf ball. (sorry for the TMI ). This has been going on for about 2 weeks.
I've tried straight pear juice, prunes, apple juice - nothing is helping him. He was up at 3:45 this morning screaming - I'm assuming he had a bellyache. He was squirming all over when I picked him up and I can feel him straining. I just checked in with his sitter and she said he hasn't gone at all yet today. normally, he's a 4x/day pooper.
What can I do to help my little guy along?

Ah V I feel so bad for James!! Riley has this issue all the time when she really gets backed up and hasn't gone in a few days my last resort I use Pedia Lax is the brand and I get the Liquid Glycerin suppositories. They work really quick on her. Hope this helps and he gets some relief.

This is what I would do if its been going on that long. Did you try the thermometer?

Thanks babe! I'll pick some up after work today. Do I have to check with my ped before giving it to him?

My Ped gave me the green light awhile ago!! I just put some extra vaseline around the top and squirt alittle out to make sure the hole isn't covered in vaseline you will see what I mean just insert as quick as possible and you will see in minutes at least that is how it is with Riley.
Let me know how it goes!!

Re: Toddler constipation
let him eat a pear instead of giving him the juice.
if he skips a day of pooping, he eats pears
also, the thermometer trick.

Re: Toddler constipation
Miralax...if it still doesn't do the trick, then a suppository. Sometimes she poops out the suppository right away but it still helps getting things going. Anytime I feed her lentils and brown rice, it seems to help too. GL! My DD has similar issues!

Re: Toddler constipation
I second Miralax. The thing with the suppositories is that they will clear out just what is really near the anus. Miralax is a laxative & stool softener that will clear things out "along the way." It is safe & not habit forming. My doc recommended starting with a half a capful, daily for a week. I mix it right in DD's juice in the AM. He said after that to go down to a quarter capful for a week and then stop if she seems regular again.
ETA: You can buy it at the pharmacy.

Re: Toddler constipation
Vanessa, Jordan's GI had us use Milk of Magnesia for Jordan. The amount though depends on weight so you may want to check with ped. We have been giving prunes (pureed) on a daily basis for his constipation from milk.
Hugs to James and you!

Re: Toddler constipation
Can you try a suppository? They have pediatric ones. I had to use it with my DS at only 8 days old
Or what about asking your Ped for Miralax?

Re: Toddler constipation
We are going through this with DD it is brutal to watch her :( She actually started vomitting from being backed up any liquids that went down came right up and would scream and cry from pain saying "kaka" and pointing to her belly...the night she started vomitting we took her to the ped the next day and she was apparently impacated. He gave her a glycerin supposatory that we picked up from CVS (toddler version) and she went within 10 minutes of that and then she got another one that night. If that method didn't work we were supposed to give her dulcolex but luckily it worked. We also combined it with 1/2 package of Miralax and she went 6 times the next day so then we went from one extreme to the next! We are still working on her belly issues and gave her another glycerain supposatory 2 nights ago. We are cutting back on the milk a little and upping her pear and prune juice and I am really trying to get more fruit and veggies in her diet! It's heart breaking when they can't communicate what's wrong. Maybe you can talk to your ped about what to do.

Re: Toddler constipation
Fiber fiber and more fiber. Try Fiber One Oats and Chocolate bars- they are delicious!! Switch out your bread for sandwiches with Double Fiber bread. Also fruits anything but bananas because they bind.

Re: Toddler constipation
DS used to take benefiber - he had "pellet poops". When he doesn't go at all, I get him prune juice. I buy the small cans - more expensive but less waste.

Re: Toddler constipation
Have you tried to put Benefiber in his drinks? That worked for JJ at one point. Also White Grape Juice is a good one too

Re: Toddler constipation
Plum juice worked for DS. The one and only time he was constipated. What came out was a big as what I would do on a regular day.:(

Talk to your ped about using Miralax. Works wonders.
