Re: Toddler moms, please come in
Since she's 2, I would definitely talk to your ped about her speech development. How's her comprehension of basic commands?
We went for Nate's 15 month visit today and DH told the ped that he was concerned with Nate's speech development. He says mama indiscriminately and pa on occasion. He says something that resembles dog. So the doc referred us to a program that does complete testing to see if there are any issues. I kinda thing DH is being over paranoid, but I guess it would be a good thing to find out if there is a problem now.

Re: Toddler moms, please come in
I would definitely get her evaluated. She is old enough to say more. Don't be surprised if she's just a late talker, I have a friend whose son's language came alive at age 3, and my nephew was the exactly same. One is 3 1/2 and the other is 5 1/2 and both are completely up to speed. But if the help is there and she should need it, why not take advantage of the service? Can't hurt.

I would also recommend an evaluation. I went through the entire process with my son ( who by the way does not stop talking now) . If you want info FM me.

Re: Toddler moms, please come in
My DS was a very late talker as well. Now he doesn't ever stop talking
ETA: I forgot to post that I think in your situation it is a little different, She is learning two languages at once ( English and Spanish) My son was being taught two languages also and I think that had a lot to do with it.
FM me if you need to talk or have any questions!

Re: Toddler moms, please come in
personally i would get an evaluation because i believe early intervention is the best thing you can do for a kid. she will learn while she is spongy. between 1 and 5 they learn the most and the easiest. speech therapy can be great for her. they say by 2 years old kids should have 50 words and be putting together 2 word phrases. my kids didn't do this but i did have them evaluated. good luck

Re: Toddler moms, please come in
kids learning two languages often have some normal delays.
While I do think you should ask your ped about it, I think he should have a larger vocabulary, but having a conversation doesnt come unitl later. DS will be 4 in January and he has always had a hige vocab but its only in the past few months that he can have a conversation.

I would have the evaluation but you probably will have no problem because you also speak another language. The evaluation is free though the school district. So why not have one. It will give you piece of mind. Plus if you need the services early intervention is best.

Re: Toddler moms, please come in
At two my son was not talking a lot either. My dh was very concerned, but my pediatrician told us to give it another 6 months. As time went on he was saying more and more words and then out of nowhere who started speaking sentences. It all happened very quickly. Now at 2 1/2 he knows the entire alphabet, a few songs, and can count to 10. If you are concerned talk to your pediatrician. But I would not panic just yet.

Re: Toddler moms, please come in
My ped suggested that by 22 months if she had not improved, to get her evaluated for Early Intervention. The process is completely free and most likely you will qualify for speech in your home 1-2x a week. My daughter is going to be 3 in Oct and she just exploded with her words. Speech therapy definetely helped. FM if you want more info.

Re: Toddler moms, please come in
I agree that her word count seems low for a 2 year old but I've never dealt with the bilingual issues personally.
The evaluation will give you a great peace of mind if they say she's fine. If she needs help, you'll be getting it taken care of quickly.
I know with Joseph it was helpful to get him evaluated. If nothing else, you'll see how smart your little girl is since they do an IQ test too.

Re: Toddler moms, please come in
Doesn't hurt to get her evaluated but honestly, I thought Amber's vocab was limited too until I took her to nursery school and the kids there are barely past the "mama/dadda" stage. She's in a "2's" class. If she can comprehend basic commands and she "knows" what you're talking about, you should be alright
I think it's awesome she's going to be bi-lingual
