Toilet Training Girls
Sara is no where ready to be trained but I am just curious at what age was your little girl trained or started to show signs that she is ready to be trained. Sara is barely talking so she cant tell me yet. Thanks

Re: Toilet Training Girls
olivia started a little over a month ago. she would run up to me and grab her diaper. that is how i would know. now she says caca and pee pee so we take her to the bathroom when she tells us and run the water. most of the time its pee not caca but i think she likes the word. we got a toilet that goes on the floor and can come apart. when you take it apart its a stepstool and insert for the normal toilet. i like having the option for her. oh she is 16 months old and think by the end of the summer we should be out of diapers. yipee

Re: Toilet Training Girls
Maddie started going on the potty at 15 months. It was because her brother was being trained at the same time. She would say, "Pee-pee?" Walk to the little potty, sit down on it. I would pick her up, take off her diaper & she would go.
I would say most start at 19mos - 2 years from what I've seen.

Re: Toilet Training Girls
Thanks. Sara is 15 1/2 months and is showing no signs at all . Maybe if she could talk that would help. I think I will buy her a potty though just to introduce her to it.

Re: Toilet Training Girls
Shari, i got a video and book on it at the library and showed her the book and take her with me when i go to the bathroom. I also let her flush the toilet. she loves to do that. and over time she started pulling on her diaper. this is what my pediatrican told me- after they eat the tend to go to the bathroom. i would get her a potty or hold her over the toilet. running the water can help too. and tell her ok lets go potty and before you know it she will be doing it. we were doing more poop than pee in the beginning but now its mostly pee and she calls pee caca now so its hard to figure out what to expect. also they might run to the toilet and already went in the diaper but it shows that they understand. good luck and fm if you have any questions.

Re: Toilet Training Girls
Both of my kids were trained at 2.5 and were trained within days. I think its the rare child that's ready much before then. But I think many parents start at 2 or before and find that it takes months. With both my kids we picked a day, gave the diapers to a "baby" and never looked back. There were a few accidents, but really very few. I devoted a full week each time, stayed close to home and thankfully it worked. I really believed it would not have worked much before that point.
I also have to add that although I used pull ups the first time, I didn't the second time. I really believe they are a waste and the child believes they have a fall back position.

Re: Toilet Training Girls
Shari - I wouldn't worry about it too much if she's not showing any signs (interest in the potty, taking off her diaper, telling you right after she goes/as she's going). 15 months was early. I think they only reason Maddie did it was because Joseph was being potty trained. (It was h3ll to get her to sit down & go though. )
She would watch the "Going to the Potty, Potty" videos with him.
You could also try the big girl underpants (huge hit!) but put them UNDER pull-ups so she feels wet & uncomfortable.

Re: Toilet Training Girls
Shari -- Emily has been showing signs for a few months (interest in the bathroom, she pretends to wipe herself over her clothes and everything, tells me when she goes peepee or phewphew) but to be honest I'm just so darn busy that I feel like I don't have the time.
So I am waiting until the summer and we'll give it a shot. She'll be 20-22 months at that time anyway and I think that's closer to potty training age.
I do think that if you push it and they aren't ready, it could be a setback. So I would get the potty, let her get comfortable with what it is, and then let her lead the way from there.

Nearly every medical journal I've read says that babies are not physically ready to hold their bladder until about 18 months. (Yes, there are the occasional ones who can train earlier, but it's often the parents who are trained.) DD is 12 months, and we're not going to push her at all. DS is 4, and he's fully trained, so hopefully she'll learn from him, and pick things up earlier than he did. We are also not going to do the pull-ups this time around. DS felt like he didn't need to be trained, since the pull-ups are so efficient at keeping him dry.
We'll probably start trying when DD is around 2, but if she doesn't want to, we'll wait a few more months.
