Tomorrow, we go to the OB/GYN for...(UPDATE)
... a TTC consultation. You ladies offer a tremendous amount of information but I'll be honest, all of the letters used in abbreviation confuse the heck out of me and I don't know if I have the attention span for a book. I want to hear it right from a doctor's mouth!!!
All I know is that I am too old to "wing it". Let's just hope that after I finish this month's worth of pills, and a month or two of waiting, that it comes easy for us!
BABY DUST FOR EVERYONE!!!
UPDATE
Ok so we went to the doc and he answered many questions based on my fears and things that I have read here. He put my mind at ease.
1) He told us that he hasn't recommended a basal body thermometer in over 10 years.
2) He told us that the amount of years I have been on birth control pills will have no bearing on our ability to conceive.
3) He told me to finish the pack of pills I am on and have my period. Then I should wait for my first natural period and starting on Day 10, "have relations" every other day. There is a 72 hour "window of opportunity" for the eggs to fertilize. He mentioned that sperm count may go down if we were to "have relations" EVERY day. So between the 72 hours and the 48 hours between "relations", we should be able to nail it within a couple of months.
4) He told me there was no reason for me to "chart" anything until and unless we are not pregnant within 5-6 months. He prefers to use as few clinical interventions as possible and that I'd drive myself nuts if I was taking my temperature unnecessarily. Then DH added an unexpected yet relevant comment. He said that with so many things to do, I'd stress out measuring and counting and what not. Many couples are able to conceive when they aren't trying so hard. Maybe that will be us. Only time will tell.
5) Based on my age he would recommend an amniocentesis. I agreed.
6) Surprisingly enough, he told me that I should be on MORE folic acid than I am currently taking. According to "all of the stuff out there," more than three sources said I should be taking 400mcg. The doc said I should be on 1mg which means I have to use the pill splitter because the containers are open. Too funny.
I trust my doctor 100%. He is the most kind and gentle soul and NOT an alarmist. He basically told me not to worry until and unless I have to. I also learned that the internet is not always a relaible source of information and that every woman/couple is DIFFERENT. What works for one couple may not work for another. Again, I hope it is easy for us.
Then we get home and DH throws me for a looop when he asks:
"How is your cervical mucus?"
WHO IS THIS GUY????

Re: Tomorrow, we go to the OB/GYN for...
Thanks ladies. It took a lot of compromise to decide exactly when we (I) would go off of birth control. DH wanted to have more time together alone as a newlywed couple but my age (36 this summer) does not afford me the time that he would like to have. I also told him that it would take a couple of cycles before we could really "try" anyway. I am simply not progressive enough (or willing) to have children in my 40s. As the youngest child of MUCH older parents, they were quite limited, in many areas, in regard to the experiences we were able to share as parents and children.

Re: Tomorrow, we go to the OB/GYN for...
OK so we go to the doc later tonight and I wonder how DH is going to be. He just seems so cool about things. Makes me wonder if he is at all nervous about our first step towards parenthood. I asked him to make a list of questions that he may have. Yeah right, good luck Leslie.

My parents were older when I was born too and I have to say that I never considered it a problem. They married in their early 30's and tried for a few years before my sister came along. They had a very comfortable life by then and we had everything we wanted, while some kids I grew up with never had a vacation.
I'm 38 and only married 6 months and don't feel any pressure to try conceiving yet. I guess it's because I always considered my parents to be more youthful than their age and I'm hoping I have the same genes.
Wishing you lots of luck with your appointment and lots of

Re: Tomorrow, we go to the OB/GYN for...
Thanks.
It seems as if many couples are choosing to start their families later in life for a multitude of reasons. But if I could have written the script of my life, I would have written myself as married and a parent ten years ago. It didn'th appen that way so I am now dealing with the cards that I was dealt.
My parents are/were about 15 to 20 years older than those of my peers. They were married in 1956 and did not live the healthy and active lives that people live today. They were rather sedentary and did not eat well balanced meals. I do realize that a 38 year old today is MUCH healthier (relatively speaking) than a 38 year old in 1970 (the age of my mother was when she had me and year of my birth). I took measures to improve my own health before I succumbed to an unhealthy lifestyle. I know that as a result, I will be a healthier and happier parent. I have to fight the genetics! Some got the good genes and some don't.

Ain't that the truth. First off, good luck with the TTC!!!!! Lots and lots of
I'm 31 and DH is 38, about to be 39. I don't consider us old to have children. Just like you said Goldi, alot of people are opting to have children late in life. And to be honest, if I could have written my script, it would have been to have been married with children already. I'm dealing with the deck that was given to me also. I'm trying to take the necessary steps to live a long, happy, and healthy life so I can be around and see my children (and step-children) grow up and have their own kids. We'll be attending our next appointment with a different fertility clinic in about a month to decide which office we like better. I've definitely got the baby bug!!!!!!

If it is ANY consolation, my sister in law was 27 when she conceived, she had JUST come off the pill, and poof.....Connor was made, so I wish you lucky babydust like that!

Re: Tomorrow, we go to the OB/GYN for...(UPDATE)
Sounds like your Dr.'s appointment went great. I agree with your doc that you should try "naturally" (without charting and temping) for a while. and we also BD'd every other day (I didn't realize when I was doing it that's what Doctors suggest ) when I saw EWCM. I actually saw EWCM twice during my cycle, so I made sure to BD during both times of noticing it.
Good luck! Lots of
And remember, the most important thing is to HAVE FUN

Re: Tomorrow, we go to the OB/GYN for...(UPDATE)
Another in the "if it makes you feel better..." category....
I am 38 (lurking here, not trying yet) and my friend who is the same age as me conceived her child at 36 the very first time they tried without protection. She was actually a little shocked because she too heard so much about it being harder if you are over 35. Everyone is different, and just because you are older, it doesn't necessarily mean you will have trouble.

I wholeheartedly agree. We are married one week shy of three months and no sooner than when DH stepped on the glass, were people telling us that we needed to have kids right away because our window of opportunity is narrowing. Im thinking "Thanks. I know how old I am. I know there are risks and no, I do not see myself as progressive enough or willing to have a child in my 40's right now so don't you worry. " They make me feel as if my ovaries are dried up prunes.
