Tongue thrust and starting cereal ques.
My DD constantly sticks her tongue out. She is almost 4 1/2 months. The dr. said that if this doesn't go away within a month or so she may have to see a speech pathologist?!
Has this happened to anyone, or any words of advice?
When we give her cereal her tongue is constantly sticking out so nothing goes in.

I don't know about this, but my 3mo DS does this allthe time too. I figured it was just him getting use to his mouth, paracticing for talking, teething backlash, etc... How can a 4.5 mo old need to go to a speech pathologist? They can't even talk yet?

I don't have any personal experience with what you are describing....but a speech pathologist for a 4 month old seems a bit hasty.
Maybe your DD is just not ready for food yet.

My DD did the same thing at that age. We tried cereal and she just didn't get it. A month later, the tongue thrust was gone and at 6 months, she was eating like a pro.
She's probably not ready yet. Give it some time and keep trying.

Whoa!!!!! Why would your ped want to stress you out like this???
Tongue thrusting at this age is completely normal!!!!!! It's fine for quite a while - speech therapists, back me up on this!!!!
DC should be fine! Cailen tongue thrusted until he was almost 10 mts old!!!!

Re: Tongue thrust and starting cereal ques.
Tongue thrust is very normal at this age. Usually it disappears by 6 months or so, but I wouldn't worry at all yet since it is TOTALLY normal! I think my DD's tongue thrust disappeared between 5 1/2 to 6 months.
SLPs treat children as early as birth and are feeding specialists as well. They deal with lots more than just talking! (I'm an SLP turned SAHM)

I'm an SLP---and my DD did the same thing. I actually took a break from the cereal for a couple of weeks and then tried again when she was ready. I wouldn't be concerned just yet... If you want to keep trying though, put a little bit of pressure on the center of the tongue with the spoon. Did the pediatrician notice anything else of concern or just the tongue thrust?

Re: Tongue thrust and starting cereal ques.
I noticed the tongue thrust and mentioned it to him, he said we could revist it in a month if it didn't go away, but he doesn't want her to "get behind the eight ball with starting food"

I think your doctor is being a bit aggressive with this! Some people wait until 6 months to start solids.... I wouldn't rush it if she's not ready!
