Tony Nominations came out!!
. . . and the Wedding Singer got nominated for Best Musical?
Best play nominations are great - History Boys is wonderful and Lieutenant of Inishmore is hilariously violent and over the top. . .
I saw Shining City in London and really liked it - but I havent seen it in NY yet - has anyone seen it? The Times gave it a rave, but they tend to fall over themselves praising anything that Conor McPherson writes.
and Julia Roberts did not get nominated - I didnt see her - was she as bad as the critics said?

Re: Tony Nominations came out!!
I heard the same thing about Lieutenant of Inishmore. Julia Roberts has never been on stage before - acting on stage is so different from being on film. I'm not surprised that she wasn't nominated from all that I've read about her performance.

Re: Tony Nominations came out!!
I couldn't believe that "The Wedding Singer" was nominated either. I guess that just shows how desperate they are for NEW musicals. I was also disappointed that Lauren Molina wasn't nominated for best featured actress in a musical. For the first time I actually enjoyed a Johanna in "Sweeny Todd".
I haven't had a chance to see "History Boys" or "Inishmore", but have heard nothing but raves from my peers.

Yes, she was excellent and overlooked. I havent seen threepenny opera - is it worth it? A colleague of mine said that the wallace shawn translation was awful, but I'd still like to see it.
Lieutenant of Inishmore is pretty standard McDonagh - but this is him trying to be Tarantino. I'm actually surprised at how well it works. When I read it I thought it was pretty trite. . . but the Atlantic stage company production was really wonderful. . . I dont know how it is on B-way - but they added 2 more gallons of blood to it to compensate for the larger space!

I haven't seen "Threepenny". I have to admit that I have never been a fan of the show and unless I can get discounted tickets I doubt that I will see it.

I was so psyched about threepenny, and just excited to see something written by Brecht. but my professir told me it was absolutely horrible.

Re: Tony Nominations came out!!
I saw Julia Roberts twice and I was underwhelmed the first time.
The second time I had my binoculars and was more impressed.
I think the thing about her is that she does so many small facial expressions that it just doesn't register on stage.
I was a little surprised Bradley Cooper wasn't nominated because he rocked.

You can see free Brecht this summer at Central Park - Meryll Streep is playing the title role in Brecht's Mother Courage.
