Both. You have no clue what kind of emergency can arise while giving birth. What if the baby stops breathing? What if the heart rate drops dangerously? Life and death can be determined in mere minutes if something goes wrong, and if you do not have the necessary medical equipment, knowledge and training, it can turn ugly, very quickly. Personally, I wouldn't take the risk.

I do know that homebirth midwives carry oxygen for baby, and are up to date of newborn resucitation techniques. They also carry pitocin to help if the is post-partum hemorraging. And they intermittently monitor the heartrate with a doppler. Every homebirth midwife I've spoken to will not do a homebirth if its the woman's first child, if she's had previous c-sections, she's less than 37 weeks, etc. Most have back-up plans in case there were and emergency, and will call an ambulance immediately if anything goes wrong. Granted, if you're 40+ minutes away from a hospital I wouldn't take the risk.

They have also done studies that show planned homebirths with low risk Moms is as safe as hospital births. They have the same infant/maternal mortality rates and homebirth has a lower infant/maternal morbidity rate. I'll try to find it.

So far I've found there are only a few life or death conditions during labor that cannot be handled during a homebirth.

That being said, you make the choices based on your comfort level. If you don't feel safe outside of a hospital then hats fine. For me, I have no problems with it and will have a home waterbirth. Having had 3 uneventful vaginal deliveries I'm not high risk by any means and am the perfect candidate for homebirth.

def not for everyone.
I understand people like things the" natural way"
but I def do not want a midwife admistering ait to my child.
I had**** baby whose heartrate dropped I am glad i got a c-section rather then me giving birth at home in a tub then have her deal with CP or a form of retardation or even death....

I would do homebirth if I could basically spit and hit the hospital.
and..........

we had no idea she had issues...
and with my son---we had no idea I could never ever pass a child..
with that being said..how does the next female know all that? It is simply a assumption and a prayer things go smoothly.
I by no means think c sections should be taken lightly but they are necessary alot of the times.
Not all of us like being gutted and going through major surgery.

Re: Too many c-sections being performed in the US?

I haven't read through everyone's responses, so I could be repeating what has already been said, but I do want to point out that I don't think a C section is an "easy way out". I mean, it's a major surgery, so I don't think dr.s perform them because they are lazy, maybe it's time effective for some dr.s, but if you go to a dr. that you feel performed a c section or wants to perform a c section out of sheer laziness or convenience, then you obviously need to find a new dr.
As for me, I had my daughter at 38 weeks because she was breech. My dr. did not want to chance me going into labor because there was no way she was going to turn and then we'd be put in the position of me having an emergency c section, which would have been much worse. So I had the faith in my dr. to know what was right. I know this is not the case all the time. I know that sometimes you end up with a different dr. or even a different practice covering your labor, but as far as planned c sections go, I really don't think they just take it lightly. At some point, I have to use my judgement and still have faith in my dr.

Re: Too many c-sections being performed in the US?

I don't think Dr's are performing major surgery out of sheer laziness.

I had a c-section with DD. I was developing pre-clampsia. They had done a sono to see how big she was and she was measuring big. I was dialated 2cm, but she was not dropped. I went to the Dr. to see how we were going to procede, due to my blood pressure creeping up very quickly. He told me both options, and I asked for his opinion. He suggested a c-section. If they tried to induce me, he fully beleived it would have ended in a c anyway due to the preclampsia and the Dr was concerned that she was a big baby and I would have a problem with a vaginal birth. I have never doubted my decision or the Dr's. He suggested this route for a reason, although he did give an option. I agreed with reasons why and I WAS not putting my baby in jeporady to try and have a "natural" birth.

I was on medication through out the whole procedure and I felt weird and groggy, but it was to my benefit and the baby's.

I am Very comfortable with my Dr's, hey they went to medical school and deliver baby's all the time.. Who am I to second guess them with my 4 years of business school.!!!
