Took Maddie to the dermatologist today for what I thought was a scar on her thigh....
ever since I can remember DD has had what I thought was a scar on her thigh. It is about 2 inches long and has a scaly appearance. Well, it broke into two and has been changing from red to white, so I finally took her into the Pediatric Dermatologist.
It was so interesting what I found out. It could be one of two possibilities - both are pretty rare:
1) It's a variation of a mole or a birthmark that grows in a linear formation.
2) It's a rash that usually appears at birth (which happened with her) and is 2x more prevalent in little girls. The Dr. thinks this is what she has. He prescribed a steroid cream and will see her in a month. If the lesion responds to the cream, then we know it's the rash...if not, it's the mole variety.
I always thought it was a scar, but when it started changing in size and color, I knew it was skin-related.
So interesting. I'm just glad it isn't anything serious..it's basically a cosmetic problem. It's so far up on her inner-thigh that even if it never disappears it is not a big deal. I'll know she's up to no good if a boy knows about it

Does it look segmented? Meaning, was it in a complete line or did it look like a bunch of little dots sort of strung together?
Since it is turning from red to white, that is generally a sign of involution for a birthmark. Usually the shift in color will move from the center of the birthmark to the edges - but in a linear formation I am unsure - is it changing color uniformally or is the center turning white and it is moving to the borders?
Given her age, this is the time when a hemangioma (birthmark caused by excess of blood under the skin) would really start going away. They do grow in straight lines, though not all too often.
Birthmarks are actually 5 times more common among fair skinned little girls.
Glad that it's nothing major and your little girl is fine!
