Tooth extraction & implants advice needed
So dh has a cracked tooth all the way int back, in front of a wisdom tooth. It needs to be extracted. His options are:
1. Extract the tooth only
2. Extract it & get bone grafting (supposed to help the gym line from getting soft)
3. Extract & bone grafting...and then get an implant.
Anyone have any experience with this? Will he really have issues down the line if he just gets it extracted? Should he at least get the bone grafting done? We really don’t want to do the implant because it’s expensive & I feel can lead to issues later on (he’s 35 years old).
Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

I had the exact same situation about 10 years ago. Same tooth, same crack to the root, tooth couldn't be saved
They gave me all those same options.
The implants /bone graft was very expensive and my insurance wouldn't cover an implant.
I ended up doing nothing.
It is so far in the back that it does not show at all and over time the gap got smaller as my teeth naturally shifted a bit into the space. (The shift was not noticeable on any of my teeth that are visible) But now the space back there is so small I couldn't do an implant if I wanted to.
I have zero issues from not replacing it. Zero
I'm glad I never wasted the money to be honest

Second molar implants aren't really worth the time and money according to my dentist. I trust that opinion.

I’ve had extraction and implants before but they were front teeth and visible so necessary (chipped due to childhood accident, root canal failed years later). The process is long and expensive. My dental insurance covered little of it. I did get bone grafting done the same time as the extraction then 4-5 months later got the implant, then another 4-5 months got the crown. I did have an issue with one of the implants getting rejected so I had to have it redone. If it’s not a necessary tooth and you can live with it, id probably just leave it.

I had a tooth (top back) extracted a few months ago and I just had the bone grafting done, I did not get an implant. It was an easy, fast procedure and the recovery was quick. It felt a little funny at first having a tooth gone (especially when I was eating) but over a few weeks I got use to it. Now I don't really notice it all anymore. Good luck to your DH.
ETA - The extraction and grafting was inexpensive, it's really not a big thing to get the graft. They just insert a piece of artificial bone into the space where the tooth was and then stitch it closed. The stitches dissolve on their own.
I recommend getting the graft because it makes he gum more rigid and sturdy which is helpful when you're eating otherwise the area will be so much softer. I was worried about eating at first even with the graft so I think the extraction and graft is the better option.

I think it depends on the person and how bad your gums / teeth are. My husband waited too long get his implant and his teeth shifted causing him problems.
When I got my tooth extracted, I did the bone graft. You should minimum do that because it is good for your gums. I ended up getting the implant 4 years after, my gum in the area where the tooth was missing was sensitive and I was tired of eating only on one side. It was uncomfortable. When I finally got the implant they said it was good I got the bone grafting because it was easier to get an implant.

I had that same tooth extracted. My dentist didn't even offer an implant. She just doesn't really do them for that tooth unless requested. It's been a few years and I never felt any different, never had any trouble eating.

That is exactly what happened to me. It was so far back and the hole is practically gone now.
I had no issues with sensitivity or eating at all either.

I had the same thing happen. I got the tooth extracted - that’s it. I still wear my retainer from 2000 - lol - and my teeth haven’t shifted

Tooth extraction & implants advice needed
I had the same tooth extracted a long time ago, never got an implant. The only issue i am having is i do have TMJ and it is getting worse, it was suggested now to think about an implant to help off set my bite, but I probably won't do that at this point. I can survive..

If you extract and graft, the graft will preserve bone BUT for only a short time. Without any opposing force (from a tooth) the bone will resorb anyway. The graft is just delaying the inevitable. Only do the graft if you were seriously considering an implant as a possibility at some point in the future.

Bone Grafts After a Tooth Extraction
The most common reason for a dental bone graft is to prevent bone loss following a tooth extraction. These are called "socket grafts" because the bone-graft material is inserted into the empty socket left by the extracted tooth.
Do all extraction sockets absolutely need a bone graft? The answer is no. But, many of them do, especially if you have a lot of soft tissue missing, such as when you have serious periodontal disease. Or, if a significant amount of bone is already missing from your alveolar ridge, you should get a bone graft right after any extraction.

Wow that is a good price. I had to pay $500 for my bone graft and that was a "reduced" price. The extraction was covered by my dental insurance but I think they billed $300 for it.

I was surprised it was so inexpensive, I actually expected to pay WAY more. I guess my insurance must have picked up a good portion of it.
