Totally Random Birth Question
So we went to our first birthing class last night and they showed a video. 99% of the women giving birth in the video were completely naked. I sort of expected I would be wearing a gown during childbirth but now am wondering if this is standard procedure. The class is more oriented towards alternative midwife and natural childbirths so I didn't want to offend anyone there by asking my stupid question. So all you nice non-judgemental ladies, please excuse my stupid question....but do I get to wear a gown during the pushing phase??

Re: Totally Random Birth Question
I wore a long t-shirt style nightgown, but in hindsight, I just should have draped a sheet over me and done it in the buff as I struggled to get my nightgown off when we did skin to skin and the cord was cut while he was on my chest.
eta...once everyone saw a baby coming out of my vagina, I wasn't conscious in the least about being naked.

Re: Totally Random Birth Question
I wore a gown the whole time. There's no way I'd be giving birth naked! I didn't feel like the gown was in the way at all. I don't know anyone who's given birth in the nude!

Re: Totally Random Birth Question
That thought never even crossed my mind!
I am using a midwife and going down the route of natural childbirth (water birth preferably). So I was assuming I'd be wearing like a tankini or bathing suit top. Never considered being completely nude.

I'll probably feel this way at the end of the whole thing, but for now, I'm thinking hospital gown (especially b/c I plan to BF afterwards).

Re: Totally Random Birth Question
I think that I had a hospital gown on but I don't remember. I was in a hot tub during part of my first birth and was trasitionaed over to the bed ehen it was time to push. I think they put a hospital gown over me so I wouldn't catch a cold.

Really, I mean that's the part we usually want to cover up most, not sure the rest matters much, but I think I'd like something at least draped over me until the delivery that can be easily moved. I never thought about this, hope the room isn't cold! I'm more concerned about all the resident physicians that will probably come in to take a look for the "educational experience". I think NSUH is a teaching hospital... I know Stony Brook was infamous for bringing hords of med students in whenever I needed an x-ray.

Re: Totally Random Birth Question
NSHU is a teaching hosp. They bring people in, I dont remember it being any outrageous parade. I wore the hospital gown. I was going to change into my own gown, but then I remembered that after you give birth you are still bleeding (TMI) so I didnt want to dirty my own gown.

Re: Totally Random Birth Question
I had on two gowns. One on the front and one sort of like a robe.

My BFF started her labor at a birthing center and she was totally naked and when they had to take her across the street for an emergency c-section they wanted her to walk across in her bathrobe only

Re: Totally Random Birth Question
I wore a gown during the later part of my labor, the first half I was in the whirlpool tub but DH and I were alone, the nurses came in and out but I was under the water.

Re: Totally Random Birth Question
ladies- thank you all for your answers to my ridiculous question. i emailed the class coach and she said that it is your choice but that many women at birthing centers (where the video was filmed) were more comfortable without a gown.

Re: Totally Random Birth Question
I am def. going to wear a gown... it's bad enough that everyone in there will be seeing portions below the belly, they don't need to see it all
