Totally Random Question-- Genetics and Pregnancy

So-- I was just wondering about this. It's more of a discussion-- so, not sure what board this goes on.

For mommies and soon to be mommies, is/was your pregnancy, or the way you carry your pregnancy similar to how your mom carried?? Like, how you looked, how you felt, etc. Or is it just that each pregnancy is so totally different that there are no comparisons.

Was just a random thought I was having-- and thought I would post it here!

Re: Totally Random Question-- Genetics and Pregnancy

No, nothing like my mothers, but labor was very similar. My mother labored very short labors with my sister and I and we both had very short labors. Not sure if there is any connection though.

Well besides me having twins and the complications that went along with it - some things were similar - we carried similarly, and didn't gain much weight.

As for the labor, it took her forever to go into labor with me, and I showed up at the hospital at 5 cm (without even knowing I was in labor). I wound up with a c-section (mainly b/c of twins) and she didn't.

We gained around the same weight. I gained 23 I think she gained 28. She had some morning sickness. I had EXCRUCIATING morning sickness (all day long), SHe had a boy first I had a girl. All the wives tales were true for me though if that helps any. The HB was always above 160, my stomach went from hip to hip, I was sick as a dog with morning sickness and whatever else follows for a girl happened. I was all girl! Everyone pinpointed it from day one.

Re: Totally Random Question-- Genetics and Pregnancy

My pregnancy was nothing like my Mom's two pregnancies with my brother and myself. She didn't have a drop of morning sickness with either of us (I had it bad until week 14).. she gained weight differently than me , all belly, and gained less than I did overall Chat Icon And both times she was induced after going past her due date, whereas I went into labor on my own 3 days before my due date!

The only similarity between my Mom and myself was conceiving and our history of miscarriage Chat Icon It took my Mom 5 yrs to have my brother, she miscarried 2x and then went onto have me 4 years later. I was TTC nearly 2 yrs and miscarried my first pregnancy before conceiving my son.. Both my Mom and myself have similiar gynelogical issues in terms of not ovulating, etc....but the similarities ended there once we finally did become pregnant Chat Icon

Re: Totally Random Question-- Genetics and Pregnancy

My pregnancy was very similar to my mother's. We carried very similarly. We both gained very 19 pounds but had pretty big babies. We even the same complication - Pre-Eclampsia. She delivered early, I delivered late.

I often wonder if a lot of these things are hereditary. I also wonder if fertility is genetic. My mother has female cousins that could not have children and the female children of the male cousins cannot either.

Re: Totally Random Question-- Genetics and Pregnancy

im not pregnant nor ever have been...

but my mother had me and my sister.

my sister was her first - she said she gained 10lbs, was never sick, barely felt pregnant, didnt even wear maternity clothes.

two years later, shes pregnant with me, and she gained 60 lbs, was sick every day, her hair was falling out...the list goes on!

I am reminded every day of what a bad pregnancy I was - good thing I turned out goodChat Icon

Re: Totally Random Question-- Genetics and Pregnancy

Well right now I am 18 weeks so I can answer based on up to this point.

I was very similar to my mom in terms of "fertility"...I was very worried that it would take me a long time to conceive but, like my mom, it happened right away - not sure if that is genetic or a coincidence.

In terms of morning sickness - TOTALLY different. Every one of my mom's pregnancy's she did not have any morning sickness - never felt sick at all - just tired. From 6-9weeks I felt like throwing up all the time. Then it got better but it still comes and goes so, unfortunately, not like my mom in that respect! Also my mom said she was constantly hungry and eating all the time right from the beginning. For me, until recently I had no appetite at all and was repulsed by alot of foods. Go figure!

Re: Totally Random Question-- Genetics and Pregnancy

nothing alike...I had morning sickness and heartburn throughout..she was pregnant 9 times and never experienced it more then 2 or 3 days with each baby.

I have stretch marks up to my rib cage, she hardly has any.

I had leaky boobs at month 7, she never leaked till after giving birth.

We both gained a lot. Mine was mainly belly though, she was huge all over.

Re: Totally Random Question-- Genetics and Pregnancy

In terms of fertility, my family was very fortunate. My mother & her 3 daughters had no issues getting pregnant.

In terms of pregnancies & labor, it's hard to tell. Back then, almost everyone was completely knocked out (my mother too) for deliveries. She also carried twins. I believe my mom was very sick throughout her pregnancies.

My sisters & I had easy pregnancies. One sister had a c-section twice. My sister & I both had v-births & no pain medication twice.

Re: Totally Random Question-- Genetics and Pregnancy

Except carrying all in the belly like my mom and sister, so far I did not follow the trend of my family.

My mom, her mom, and my sister all had to be on bed rest from 12-16 wks of PG until full term. Carrying babies to term has been a major issue in my family. Grandma had 2 still born. Mom had 1 premie (1st sister), lost a child after childbirth (6 months PG) and he did not make it, sitched from 2nd sister after being on full bed rest at 12 wks PG, full bed rest for my little brother. My sister was on full bed rest at 4 month PG until 36 wks.

So far I am 27 wks and not on bed rest.

Re: Totally Random Question-- Genetics and Pregnancy

As my mom would say "Your father just looked at me and I got pregnant."

Not happening for me. It did happen that way for my sister, but she had multiple miscarriages whereas mom had none.

Re: Totally Random Question-- Genetics and Pregnancy

Nothing like my moms. She had terrible morning sickness with both of her pregnancies and horrible stretchmarks. I didn't get either. I had a very quick labor which she did as well but back then they put you out with gas so we can't really compare all that well. Her face changed and mine didn't. So all in all I don't really think genetics plays that much of a role in mother-daughter pregnancies.

Re: Totally Random Question-- Genetics and Pregnancy

I'm not pregnant, nor do I know anything about how similar a pregnancy may be from mother to daughter but I would think one has nothing to do with another.

If you think about heredity, you get half of your genes and a complementing half from your father. If you were genetically identical to a person (i.e. an identical twin), you would think there would be more similarity. But I think part of it is also the mechanics of your own personal body which may or may not be similar to your mother.

Anyway, I would think that there's no way to predict how you would be compared to your mother. It would be hard to convince me otherwise.

Re: Totally Random Question-- Genetics and Pregnancy

from what I've been told - nothing like my mother's, but exactly like my paternal aunt and grandmother - so I think there is a gentic connection, just not necessarily a maternal connection.

Re: Totally Random Question-- Genetics and Pregnancy

This is my 2nd pregnancy and it's been NOTHING like my mother's 2 pregnancies for either of them.

first: I had horrible, 9 month long m/s. I gained under 30 pounds, went a week early and had my baby in 4 hours weighing under 6 pounds. no stretch marks on my belly...boobs = yikes.

mom's first: gained 40+ pounds [i think nearly 50], i was born 2 weeks late on the day they would've induced after over 30 hours of labor weighing 8.5 pounds. HORRIBLE stretch marks on the belly, none on the boobs.

second: NO m/s at all, just a little queasiness. So far, weight gain is similar to first time around. I am so small my dr. thought I might not be 30 weeks along Friday. I am "at risk" to deliver early and within 2 hours so I may be induced to prevent not making it to the hospital. so far, still no stretch marks on the belly, possibly new ones on the boobs.

mom's second: gained 40+ pounds, m/s early one, baby was induced after 2 weeks over and it still took between 16-18 hours to deliver a 7.5 pound baby. She spent 3 weeks+ at 1cm dilated as well. a few new stretch marks on her belly, still none on her boobs.

I've actually had quite similar experiences as my grandmother...right down to my random and annoying AF! [started late and it's sporadic]

I seem to be starting my belly bump up high and my Mom said she did with me also. She also was sick the entire time and I have been too. Maybe just a coincidence

Re: Totally Random Question-- Genetics and Pregnancy

Not at all..

My mom with me and my bro
-Hospitalized for morning sickness both pg's and was sick for whole 9 months with both pg's.
-70 lb weight gain
-3 days late with me and 2 weeks late with bro
-major icky stretch marks everywhere

Me-.
-went 3-4 days early with DD
-little m/s
-no stretch marks at all on my tummy-only under my boobs
-gained 50lbs with DD, and looks like i will gain about 40 with this pg.

The only thing the same, that DD and I were both born with help of forceps
