Toured South Nassau Hospital Last Night!
First, let me just say that I adore FREE parking at a hospital! I've never seen such before aside from finding a spot on the curb in the city!
They herded all the ladies into a room and we got a "lecture" from a pediatritian on the process at the hospital. It was kind of boring TO ME b/c I've done this before. Otherwise, it was quite informative, but took an hour!!!
A nurse [also a lactation consultant] also spoke for a while about nursery procedures and of course, we had to endure a lecture on breastfeeding. I was a bit annoyed b/c she is definitely one of those people you imagine shunning you for not breastfeeding regardless of your reason. Other than that, she was great...friendly and helpful.
Then FINALLY the tour. The floor is actually quite secure. You have to be buzzed in at all times of the day either by a "concierge" or by a nurse. That impressed me.
The rooms are a nice size and I mean what else are you going to do in there? There is a flat screen TV DH was more impressed with that. ALL the rooms are private which is nice, you don't have to hope you get a nice roommate or pay extra for privacy.
The nursery is as cute as the pictures [the regular nursery is all we were allowed to see]. The waiting room has its own bathroom and small chairs and table for kids. Family and friends will be able to see EVERYTHING, quite easily, done to your new baby from the waiting area. It's really cool.
ONLY mom, dad and nurses can retrieve your baby from the nursery [obviously].
The hospital [which has been renovated as well] is very clean and not overwhelming. Even though this hospital is semi-far from our house, I really liked it and the staff.
In case you want to skip the actual tour [and if you have given birth before, I would], 3rd floor of the hospital.
VISITORS: 1pm-8pm. Dads can visit all day long, SIBLINGS [esp. those under 12] can visit during the regular hours [though I think they are flexible].
Dad cannot stay overnight [I heard someone ask] simply b/c they just aren't set up for it. Dad CAN stay overnight while you are in Labor and Delivery though.

Re: Toured South Nassau Hospital Last Night!
THANKS for this update. When are you due? I wonder when I can schedule my tour....I'll ask my doctor next week. I can't wait to see the renovations.
I delivered there last time pre-renovations and had a great experience and although I did endure the same BF lecture at the tour I can say they never once pressured me or shunned me to BF in the hospital.
So regular visitors can now come between 1-8 - all day? yuck!! Last time there were very short periods they could come and I loved that - I wanted to be alone and I know I have some people that will want to come and hang out.

Re: Toured South Nassau Hospital Last Night!
My doctor had given me a pamphlet on the hospital with a number to call for scheduling a tour. We called around the first and they called us back with the date.
The funny part is that when DH told me it was at 7:30pm, I looked at him and said : ugh, that's so late! well...you get 20+ pregnant women together, they all think 7:30 pm is too late...luckilly DH got to hear that!

I was impressed with the facility. I also spent several hours in L&D there recently and it was great. The nurses were so attentive.
I think I have decided to deliver there.

I do not know. They might prefer the tour times simply b/c it's done after visiting hours [so fewer people roaming the halls] and with the whole buzzing people in thing. I'm sure you could try!

Yeah I didn't either! People were all over their PDAs and cell phones! One lady was snacking!
Mainly, you just need to know where to go. If you have a planned c-section, you will stop in at admitting first [which is downstairs and the "guards" will/can show where it is], be taken up to the 3rd floor and from there, you will be wheeled anywhere you need to go. It's all pretty basic. For vaginal births, you skip admitting and go to the 3rd floor and get ready to have your baby!
The room was nice and does look like the pictures. The whole place seemed really clean and fresh [as it has been renovated].

Re: Toured South Nassau Hospital Last Night!
I delivered there almost 2 years ago (before renovations) and even though the rooms were older they were private and the nurses were so great. There were shorter visiting hours which I liked but I guess the bigger wing can accomodate more. The security was a tag that was attached to the babys umblical cord so an alarm went off if he was removed, they always checked the bracelets on my arm and my DH's everytime they brought the baby to us to match name and number. I will be moving to plainview before #2 arrives but we still be delivering at South Nassau since I loved it so much.

Re: Toured South Nassau Hospital Last Night!
Hello All,
I am new to this site and i was wondering if you could recommend a good obgyn. I would like to deliver at South Nassau hospital one day. Thanks for your help. I need to get genetic testing done b/c my sister was born with PKU and her doctor suggested that i be tested to see if i carry the gene. Thank you.
