Town of Islip Animal Shelter--HELP!
I found a dog at the Islip Animal Shelter that really made her way into my heart. She's a "special application" dog. I talked to my boyfriend about getting her and he's not thrilled with having someone come to the house. I have a geat vet reference as both of my dogs are up to date on all shots (rabies, distemper(multi), lepto, lymes, bord(every six months), fecal(annual). They are both fixed, and I'm friendly with the vet staff. I haven't put in an application because he doesn't really feel comfortable with people coming over the house(although he is ok with the dog). I have been visiting her to see if she gets a home and she hasn't yet. I also asked if I could volunteer to walk her, but they told me that they have to many volunteers and I should come back in a year(I never see the dogs out when I visit her!) I was wondering if the town shelter is a kill shelter, and if so, how long do they give the dogs before the put them down? Something they said to me one of the times I was there gives me the bad feeling that they are, but then someone told me that they weren't... so I don't know.
If they are, I was thinking I would wait, and if no one adopted her I would put in the application asking to not have a home visit. do you think they would adopt then? I wouldn't want her to get put down...
And has anyone ever adopted a "special app" dog from there? What was it like? Any insight?

I know that they are a kill shelter, but I don't know how long they keep them before they put them down.
May I ask why he doesn't want a home visit? I doubt they will change the rules since it does sound a little strange that someone would be so adamant about not allowing a visit.

He doesn't think that you can judge the way a person will take care of their animals by their home. He owns his own business and in so doing is constantly out on the road meeting with people at their homes. The "nicest homes" he finds aren't the nicest to their pets. Where as me meets people that have small homes with run down yards and such and yet they seem to really love their animals. So bascially he doesn't support it. He thinks your vet reference should speak for itself, and maybe also personal references.
I want her to find a home--whether that be with me or someone else. That's why I keep checking on her and I want to know if they are kill or not and how long they give their animals.

I think there's one in Huntington that doesn't, and Bide-e-wee doesn't....that's where I got one of my loveies... about 8 yrs ago.
If you ran a shelter, and it was a kill shelter, and there was a dog that's time ran out would you not adopt to someone because they don't want you in their home? That seems strange to me, that they would rather put the dog down, even though there is someone interested in taking them.

I work for the state, and believe me when I say rules are rules. I'm not saying he doesn't have a point, but you could also be running a dog fighting ring out of your home that your vet isn't aware of. I just don't think they make compromises on such things, ever. And it really wouldn't be fair to everyone else adopting that has to show their home. He may not agree with it, but it's a rule. There's a time to be pigheaded, but I think your BF may need to be the one to budge, since the county won't.

I'm pretty sure they are a kill shelter too.
I was in the market for a second cat and began visiting the shelter in Babylon. Everytime I asked how long they gave the pets I got the programed answer "as long as we can."
I do know that shelters can decline to take cats, but they have to take dogs. So I believe dogs have less time. I never heard of a home visit though...
Good Luck!!!

Re: Town of Islip Animal Shelter--HELP!
My opinion is you do what you have to do. If you want to save the dog, you deal with the home visit. If you know you are capable, then you just suck it up and let them come. I'm sorry but I don't think it's fair to expect them to give you a dog without seeing your home if that is what they normally do. If you want to save that dog, a home visit isn't the end of the world, whether you agree with it's concept and accuracy or not. JMO

ITA, great points. I personally find it odd to not budge on this if someone really wants the dog. It is absolutely in the dog's best interest and that should be respected.

Re: Town of Islip Animal Shelter--HELP!
If you tell your Boyfriend that the dog will be killed would he change his mind? What makes this dog a special application and not others? I do feel that they have this rule it should be for all dogs not certain ones? Bring your BF to the shelter and have him meet the dog maybe his heart will soften and agree to the home visit. Or tell him they can visit when he is not home so he will not feel judged.

Re: Town of Islip Animal Shelter--HELP!
So I called the shelter and they told me that they are a kill shelter. They wouldn't tell me how long they keep the dogs though(a little weird). Then after I asked her a few more times she said stray dogs get 7 days and owners dogs get 5, but it's way past that... not sure what that means?
I think if he knew what the date was, and it got closer and she was still there he would. I'm going to stop by tomorrow morning to talk to them...

My brother adopted from them. And he lives out east, they stopped and checked the outside of the house out. They want to make sure it is completely fenced in. he wasn't even home yet, when they called and let him know he could adopt the dog.

Re: Town of Islip Animal Shelter--HELP!
I used to volunteer there
What makes the dog a special adoption?
I am pretty sure that they wait a decent amount of time if the dog is adoptable. I have seen them put dogs down that were there for a while, but a while meaning , weeks, maybe months.
This was about 2 years ago so I am not sure if anything has changed but you shouldnt chance it and hopefully if you tell your BF the dog might be put down, then he will allow a home visit. It would be sad to see the dog lose its life for that reason
