Town sent us a letter: Must fix sidewalk!

Awhile ago I posted that the town came and chopped down the two old, dead trees on our curb. We were excited about this...but now....

They came and drew arrows on 2 sections (two different areas --> 3 sidewalk "boxes"each) that they want fixed because they are slightly raised!

Our neighbors sidewalks are lifted MUCH more than ours and we don' know why we're getting told to do this....we're thinking that we're under the microscope now because we had out trees chopped down....

questions: Did anyone have their sidewalks fixed by the town? How much did it end up costing? It seems like a long, complicated process to hire an outside contractor. My father says to just have the town do it -but we're not sure how much it will cost... help! :)

I don'd understand why you would have to pay for a town sidewalk to be fixed. It seems like that would be their responsibility, not yours. That's almost like them asking you to fill a pothole in the street in front of your house. Chat Icon

Although the sidewalk belongs to the town, you are responsible for its upkeep. If anyone should fall and hurt themselves, you will be sued (this happened to a friend of mine). Call the town ASAP and get the ball rolling on this.

Agreed!

We got a letter from the Town that are curb area was dirty and needed to be swept up, including tying together our tree limbs that had fallen during a recent wind blow.Chat Icon Yet, my neighbors who have tree stuff over their lawn and driveway and curb were left alone.

Even if they're not the ones who made the sidewalk a hazzard like that?

I would just get them done - we have to get ours done and are looking into it now - I think it is cheaper to do it yourself than to go thru the town - but you can price it out. Unfortunately yes you are responsible for your sidewalk if someone falls it is not worth the headache you will have if someone gets hurt.

My grandmother just fell last week on someone's uneven sidewalk and now has a fractured shoulder and needs surgery.

Yup. And here not only do we have to have it fixed but we need to use their contractors and get a permitChat Icon

Exactly - the notice said we have to get a contractor and they have to go down and get
approved and then they have to do the work and then the down has to come back and inspect it....taking down a tree is cheaper if the town does it vs. a private company - why would it be any different if they do the sidewalk..........

i'm curious how much they would charge ... it might save some headache if we use their contractors- instead of seeking out a guy to do it - who will charge us for all the trips to the town etc

It is not that complicated for the contractor to get a permit from Town Hall, all he should charge you is for the permit fee, IMO.

It might not be cheaper for you, for the Town to do it. If they don't have the manpower to keep up with the work, they might charge more than a contractor would to encourage people to take care of it on their own. Call your Town's highway department and ask them what the charge is if they fix the sidewalk.

They probably noticed yours and not your neighbor's because you had trees taken down. I am sure they automatically inspect the sidewalk after they take down a tree. They aren't necessarily going to check in front of everyone else's house.

If we went with the town they would have done the whole strip, we went on our own and did 2 squares.

I had the same thing happen just when we moved in. The town fixed it a few months ago and we just got a bill for over $600 due in October for 6 squares

Re: Town sent us a letter: Must fix sidewalk!

Just called - it's $125 per sidewalk square ... right now ...they said they might not get to us for 6-8 months...it could be even more then!

And they only give you 30 days to decide - and it's almost up...i'm freaking out a little bit...

I live in Wantagh.
